Colgate and Binghamton Play to 1-1 Draw
VESTAL, N.Y. — Alex St. John scored in the 73rd minute, but Binghamton quickly equalized, ending the game in a 1-1 draw Friday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
"It was an exciting college soccer game played with great intensity. We created several good scoring chances and just needed to find a bit more composure to make them count. We're looking forward to having a full week of training coming up to fine-tune some things before our first Patriot League match," said head coach Erik Ronning.
St. John found the back of the net for the second straight game to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage. Cason Stafford collected the ball in the box and made multiple turns to find space before playing a lofted ball that St. John headed into the bottom right corner.
The Bearcats drew even 54 seconds later. Gaven Egan passed to Tom Cohen, who took a shot that deflected off the foot of a Raider defender and landed in the goal.
Colgate played the final six minutes up a man after Egan received his second yellow card. The Raiders had one chance, a free kick in the 88th minute, but the attempt was squandered on a block by Binghamton's wall.
Oliver Townend kept the score level with 10 minutes left, making a beautiful kick save. He stopped three shots in the game.
St. John tried to score another in the 73rd minute, but his attempt got stopped by the netminder. Blake Pipkin also had an opportunity seven minutes prior when he fired a shot that got saved.
In the 63rd minute, St. John chested the ball and then hit a volley from right in front of the goal, but got denied on a diving save. Less than a minute prior, Mason Pahule put a shot off target. Jack Beerling also took a rip six minutes into the second but got denied by the keeper.
The Raiders had two good chances during the first half. In the 17th minute, Pahule put one just over the goal. Colgate earned its first corner of the game five minutes later. Liam Winograd connected on a header that got punched away on a dive by the goalie.
The Raiders' backline held off several Bearcat chances, including four corner kicks.
