Akin awarded Patriot League weekly honor

After showcasing a strong defensive presence at the net, Lal Akin, a junior from Istanbul, Turkey, has been recognized as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After showcasing a strong defensive presence at the net, Lal Akin, a junior from Istanbul, Turkey, has been recognized as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. 

During the award week, Akin played a crucial role in leading the Raiders to a 2-1 record, which included back-to-back victories over previously undefeated Syracuse, who entered the matches with a 6-0 record.

In the span of three games, Akin accumulated 17 blocks, 12 kills, and 21.5 points. Her performance was particularly notable during the Raiders' home opener and the unveiling of the 2024 Patriot League banner, where she contributed eight block assists and six kills. Akin's defensive prowess is reflected in her league-leading total of 44 blocks, maintaining an average of 1.22 blocks per set for the past three weeks.

Milan Bayless registered 46 kills, 24 digs, 10 blocks, for a grand total of 55 points to earn honorable mention nods from this week's awards. 

The Raiders will kick off Patriot League play on the road as they are set to begin on Friday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. at American.
