Colgate falls to URI
Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Colgate fell to the University of Rhode Island Sunday afternoon in Drumlins Country Club, dropping the contest by a score of 5-2. The Raiders picked up wins at lines one and two singles, but the Rams proved to be too strong in doubles and the lower singles courts.
"The ladies competed much harder and closer than last year to Rhode Island," head coach Bobby Pennington. "Game balls go to our top two Galin and Montero for winning both singles and doubles against elite players. We need to work on our doubles for Marist and get our depth going to put ourselves in a better position to win."
The matchup began with a closely contested doubles point which the Raiders narrowly dropped. Junior Amelia Galin and sophomore Sophia Montero prevailed at line one doubles, 6-4, but Colgate dropped lines two and three by scores of 6-3 and 6-2, respectively.
Montero and Galin continued their strong play into singles action with Galin winning 7-5, 6-3 at line one singles, followed shortly by Montero winning 6-3, 6-3 on court two.
However, that was all the wins the Raiders would pick up on the day as the Rams put together solid singles performances in the rest of the matchups.
The Raiders return to action this weekend where they will take on Marist at 3 p.m. on Feb. 1 inside Drumlins Country Club, followed by a journey to Hanover, N.H. to face off against Dartmouth at 10 a.m. on Feb. 2.
