Raiders Rally for First Win of 2025
Box Score EASTON, Mass. - After falling behind 2-0, Colgate rallied behind to win four of the last five singles matches and overcome Stonehill, 4-3, to open the season with a victory. The highlight of the match came when Sophomore Jerome Falcon clinched the win for the Raiders with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six.
"Wow did the boys crave, need and deserve this" head coach Bobby Pennington said on the match. "We have had three of the most adversity filled, torturous years known to man. I told the boys pre-match that this year is different, we need to get back to the tradition, culture and winning we had for so many beautiful years.
"We lost the doubles point and one singles, then Israel, Lee, Viding and Falcon played like absolute warrior dogs to clinch. Anytime we win the opener, especially 4-3, it's a great feeling."
The Raiders fell to an early deficit as Stonehill won two out of three doubles matches to take the first point. Falcon and fellow sophomore Parker McGowan won their contest at line three, 6-4, to provide the only Colgate win in doubles competition.
Stonehill added onto their lead as Jacob Borch-Nielson defeated Benito Vlassis at line one singles. However, the Raiders quickly responded with a win on court three by Aidan Lee, 6-4, 6-2.
Josh Israel then tied the match triumphing, 7-5, 6-3, on line two. Colgate fell on court four, which allowed Stonehill to take a commanding 3-2 overall lead.
However, first-year Tim Viding swung the momentum back to the Raiders with a 7-6(7-4), 7-5 win at line five singles in his first ever dual match. Finally, Falcon clinched the win with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory to move the Raiders to 1-0 on the season.
Colgate returns to action for two home matches at Drumlins Country Club. They take on Marist at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 and Binghamton at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2.
