Men's Soccer Earns Hard Fought Draw
DURHAM, N.H. - Eric Widrick picked up his second consecutive clean sheet as the Raiders settled for a hard fought 0-0 draw with New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. on Sunday evening.
COACH RONNING'S COMMENTS
"Although disappointed not to get a win, we are very pleased with the performances on the first weekend.
Very solid with our collective team defending. Goalkeeping was excellent, and we created some great goal scoring opportunities.
We have a lot we can improve upon and a great foundation to build from. We have another tough test this upcoming weekend as we host Fordham, and can't wait to start preparing."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither side was able to create a quality opportunity in the opening 20 minutes.
- Blake Pipkin found Cole Ramey in behind midway through the first half but the counter attack stalled out.
- Moments later, Pipkin picked off a loose pass and rounded the keeper then slid the ball back across to Ramey who was unable to make connection with the ball inside the New Hampshire 18-yard box.
- Pipkin used a quick change of pace on the right flank to skip past his defender and fire a shot on frame but the New Hampshire goalkeeper was equal to it.
- After the ball pinballed off a Wildcat defender to Alex St. John, the forward fired the ball just wide off the net.
- Just before the half, Eric Widrick made an astonishing double save to keep the game scoreless. Widrick blocked the first shot into the oath of another Wildcat forward who put the rebound right back at the hands of Widrick.
- The second frame started just as the first with neither team able to manufacture anything worth note.
- With less than 10 minutes left in the match, Drew Stephans whipped in a free kick that was headed down by Liam Winograd to the right foot of Ramey. Ramey ripped the volley just wide right of the post.
- That would be the closest either team would get to a winner as both teams had to settle for a scoreless draw in the end.
GAME NOTES
- Eric Widrick made seven saves in between the sticks and earned his second straight clean sheet.
- The Raiders' two clean sheets to begin the season is the first time since 2016.
- Blake Pipkin and Alex St. John led the Raiders with two shots apiece.
UP NEXT
Colgate (1-0-1) will now set its sights on Fordham as the Raiders look forward to their home opener on Saturday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
