Montero Makes Second Team All-League
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophia Montero landed on the All-Patriot League Second Team after contributing 14 wins between singles and doubles competition in her first season of collegiate tennis. She is now the second consecutive Raider to be voted a Second Team selection after Amelia Galin earned the honor in 2023.
"This is a tremendous honor for Sophia and our program," Head Coach Bobby Pennington said. "Any time you play number one as a freshman and receive All-League honors you know it's very earned and special. Sophia has incredible strokes and talent, and she has an amazing future ahead of her. It also shows the trajectory of the women's program as three years in a row we have had a first-year at first singles. This is a major part of why we have had so many winning seasons in a row."
Montero played in the first singles and top two doubles slots for the entirety of her first year. She started the season winning three out of her first five college tennis matches, sporting a three-duel win streak when she beat Le Moyne, Merrimack, and Duquesne.
In singles competition, the first-year phenom finished the season 6-9, adding an 8-9 doubles record where six of those wins came on court one. Playing with Galin in the first slot, the duo won three out of the final five matches of the season with victories over Patriot League foes Bucknell and Lafayette.
Montero returns to a young squad that does not graduate any seniors next season, reloading the current roster while adding two new first-years to the mix.
