Woodward Does it All in 73-66 Win Over Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Jeff Woodward did a little bit of everything with 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five blocked shots but it was a total team effort that fueled Colgate to its third straight win, 73-66 over Navy, on Wednesday evening inside Alumni Hall.
Woodward led four Raiders in double figures on 7-of-9 from the field, and all nine players who entered the game found the scoring column. Nicolas Louis-Jacques and Brady Cummins scored 14 points apiece and Parker Jones added 13 points and six boards along with three made treys.
In addition to his offensive success, Woodward limited Navy's big man Aidan Kehoe to six points on 3-of-12 shooting. Kehoe came in averaging 16.5 points per game with five consecutive double-doubles.
COACH LANGEL'S COMMENTS
"Challenging circumstances and we got off to a good start against a Navy team that was undefeated at home in the league and playing pretty well. We relied heavily on our most experienced guy – Jeff Woodward. He played with a warrior mentality tonight. A lot of other guys stepped up and impacted the game successfully. I'm really proud of our guys for stemming the tide tonight. Great team win on the road. Hopefully we can take this momentum forward." HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate got it going after Woodward handled an offensive rebound and dished a pass to Jones for a 3-pointer from the top of the key. That ignited a 10-0 burst capped by another trifecta from Kyle Carlesimo to give Colgate a 16-8 lead with 12:03 remaining in the first half.
Navy's Cam Cole landed back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the Midshipmen back within 16-14 before Carlesimo and Cummins swished triples on Colgate's end to extend the lead to nine points 23-14 with 8:26 to go in the opening stanza.
Cummins was Colgate's first in double-figures and he led all scorers at the break with 12 points after his driving layup gave the Raiders a 33-30 lead in the final minute of the half. Colgate led by double-digits for most of the frame but Navy used a 7-2 run to cut the Raiders' advantage to 33-32 at the intermission.
The Midshipmen eventually worked their way into a one-point lead, 37-36, before Louis-Jacques made back-to-back treys. Woodward added a layup in an 8-0 response before back-to-back 3-balls from Jones stretched Colgate's lead back to nine points, 50-41, with 13:55 left in the contest.
Navy cut the margin down to two points, 57-55, when Colgate raced on an 8-0 surge bookended by a three-point play from Jones who gave the Raiders their largest lead, 65-55, with 4:35 showing. The Raiders forced five turnovers during that stretch and held Navy scoreless for nearly five minutes.
Woodward took over late and Colgate finished the game from the free throw line to seal its third consecutive victory, 73-66.
