Colgate Outlasted by Boston U in Double OT, 93-91
BOSTON – Kyrone Alexander's off-balance go-ahead jumper in the lane with four seconds left sealed a wild 93-91 double-overtime win for Boston University (13-14, 7-7 Patriot) over Colgate (11-16, 8-6 Patriot) on Saturday afternoon inside Case Gym.
Nicolas Louis-Jacques made one big shot after another and his game-tying wing 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime, 70-70, after Colgate's defense stood tall on BU's final possession.
Louis-Jacques had another trey in the first overtime but it was two free throws from Jalen Cox who tied the game with 17 seconds left. Colgate once again made a defensive stand on BU's last attempt at the buzzer, sending the seesaw thriller to double overtime knotted at 79-79.
The Raiders trailed by as many as seven points in the second session after back-to-back 3-pointers from Alexander made it 88-81 with 2:42 showing. Colgate made one last charge aided by back-to-back triples from Brady Cummins and Cox to fight all the way back, 91-91, with 21 seconds remaining.
Alexander scored eight of the Terriers' 12 points in double overtime, but none were bigger than his game-winning pull-up jumper with four seconds left over the outstretched arms of Louis-Jacques. Cox's logo three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark and the Terriers survived, 93-91.
COACH LANGEL'S COMMENTS
"Hard-fought game. Boston U has won nine straight at home for a reason. They're a physically imposing opponent. Tough place to play. They fought really hard. First and foremost, we recognize the things they did but I was proud of our group. We established our game in the second half. Ultimately what we focus on the most is what we can control. They're a good offensive rebounding team but they got 20 in the game on 41 misses and that's just too many. We had too many needless turnovers. We have to fight and battle.
"Every game at this point – you just have to try and play your best. We're running out of time to make significant or drastic changes to improve. We've improved as a group, and in a lot of ways played well enough to win today. We have to get healthy and start going on all cylinders down this final stretch."
SEESAW SECOND HALF
Colgate trailed 27-26 at the intermission but stormed out to a 10-0 blitz early in the second half to lead by as many as eight points, 40-32, after two free throws from Parker Jones with 15:02 remaining. Jeff Woodward scored eight of the 10 points during that burst, including a pair of two-handed slams.
The Raiders kept a sizable lead for most of the second half but couldn't put the Terriers away. Another 3-pointer from Louis-Jacques extended Colgate's advantage to 60-56 with 3:42 remaining.
Boston U kept hanging around and eventually found its run, a 5-0 surge with all five points scored by Ben Defty to put the home team in front 61-60 with 2:45 showing. The lead traded hands down the stretch but the Terriers opened a three-point lead, 70-67, on a triple from Michael McNair with 35 seconds left.
The margin was still three points when Louis-Jacques was left wide open on the wing and drilled his second trey of the game to send the game to overtime tied at 70-all.
FIRST HALF GAME OF RUNS
Colgate had the first burst thanks to good minutes off the bench from Kyle Carlesimo. He sank a tough stepback in the lane and then drilled a 3-pointer in transition to give Colgate its largest lead of the half, 17-13, with just over eight minutes remaining in the first frame.
Sam Wright banked home a right-handed layup at the 7:56 mark, and then Colgate didn't score again until Woodward's jumper in the lane with 2:11 showing. Boston U got six points from Defty during that span and the home team used a 9-0 surge to open a 24-19 lead late in the half.
The Raiders ended the opening stanza on a 5-0 surge after Chandler Baker connected from long range on Colgate's final possession to trim the deficit to 27-26 at the intermission.
LEADING SCORERS
Colgate had two 20-point scorers for the first time this season, led by a career-high 25 points from Cox. Woodward had 20 points and nine rebounds but fouled out in the second overtime, which loomed large down the stretch. Louis-Jacques finished in double-figures (16) behind a 4-for-9 showing from behind the arc.
