HAMILTON – American (19-12, 13-5 Patriot) made 12 3-pointers and shot nearly 50 percent from the field to spoil Colgate's (13-18, 10-8 Patriot) senior day for the second year in a row, 67-59, Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court.

With Saturday's results around the league, Colgate has earned the No. 3 seed and will host sixth-seeded Army in the Patriot League tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, March 6. COACH LANGEL'S COMMENTS

"Another hard-fought game. American was playing for a share of a regular season championship. Some of us in our locker room know what that means and what that's about. American was the better team today. They played like the veteran group that they are. I give those guys a lot of credit. We didn't play well enough. Our teamwork was not good enough today."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The seniors set the tone for Colgate, with 3-pointers from Nicolas Louis-Jacques and Chandler Baker fueling an early six-point Raider lead, 10-4. American took its first lead, 23-22, when Matt Mayock connected from long range with seven minutes left in the half.
  • After starting 2-for-3 from behind the arc, Colgate went 1-for-9 the rest of the half. The Eagles opened their largest lead of eight points late in the stanza and that was their halftime margin, 34-26. Baker paced Colgate with seven points at the intermission.
  • Matt Rogers connected on a 3-pointer on American's opening possession to stretch the visitor's lead to double-digits, which is where the margin stood for large portions of the second half. The Eagles led by as many as 14 points in the final frame.
  • Parker Jones' third 3-pointer of the second half helped Colgate trim the deficit to 61-54, and then Baker rattled in another three-ball to close within 63-57 with 52 seconds left.
  • Colgate needed another defensive stop but couldn't get one. Rogers scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to help the Eagles secure the victory, 67-59.

GAME NOTES

  • American became the first team to sweep a regular season series against Colgate since Lafayette in 2020. The Raiders did knock off the Leopards 89-64 in the semifinals that year.
  • Chandler Baker led the team in scoring for the first time this season, finishing with 13 points. Jalen Cox scored 10 points, his seventh straight game in double figures.
  • Colgate concludes the regular season 7-2 at home during Patriot play.
  • Colgate's 59 points were its fewest in a Patriot League game since a 57-47 win at home over Lafayette in January 2019.
