Colgate Lauded with Postseason All-Patriot Honors
HAMILTON – Colgate's historic regular season was recognized accordingly when the Patriot League released its major postseason awards and All-Patriot League teams Monday afternoon.
Head Coach Matt Langel was named Coach of the Year, Tucker Richardson earned Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Keegan Records and Richardson earned All-Patriot League First Team and All-Defensive Team honors, Ryan Moffatt garnered All-Patriot League Third Team laurels, and Braeden Smith made the All-Rookie Team.
Langel, already the first head coach in Patriot League men's basketball history to three-peat for the Coach of the Year, is now the only coach to be voted for the award four times. The 12th-year head coach is the winningest head coach in program history with 199 career victories. He previously earned the top coaching honor three straight seasons (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20).
Richardson, the only player in Patriot League men's basketball history and one of four active players in the country with 1,600 points, 700 rebounds, and 500 assists, becomes the first player in conference history to hit the trifecta with Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year honors in a career.
Langel Makes History
Langel guided the Raiders to a 17-1 Patriot League record, the winningest season in the conference's 33-year history. Colgate became the first Patriot League team to win 17 league games, besting the previous record of 16 wins matched by the Raiders last season.
Colgate's 23 regular season wins tied the 2019-20 team for the most in program history on the heels of its fourth consecutive Patriot League regular season championship. Among several major headlines this season, Colgate's conference winning streak set a Patriot League record reaching 26 consecutive games and spanning more than a full calendar year.
Non-conference success was once again highlighted by Colgate's win over Syracuse – its second consecutive win over the local rival. The Raiders set a Dome record with 19 made 3-pointers and led by double-digits for the entire second half in the 80-68 victory. This came after Colgate beat Syracuse 100-85 last year for its first win over the Orange since 1962.
Richardson Completes the Trifecta
Richardson was named Rookie of the Year in 2019 and completes the career sweep with Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year to become the first player to win all three major awards since the defensive award was introduced in 2004-05. The program's all-time leader in games played (151), assists (590), and steals (213), Richardson ranks third in three-point field goals made (264), fifth in scoring (1,695), and sixth in rebounds (752). He enters the postseason needing four 3-pointers to break the program's record of 267.
This season, Richardson is averaging 14.1 points, 5.2 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 steals. The Flemington, N.J., native leads the league in assists per game and steals per game. He scored a career-high 30 points in Colgate's win over Syracuse. With 26 games in double-figure scoring, four games of at least 20 points, and two double-doubles, Richardson has led the team in scoring 10 times, rebounding six times, and assisting 18 times.
Records and Richardson Named First Team and All-Defense
Records joined Richardson on the All-Patriot League First Team, marking the second consecutive year and fourth time in program history two Raiders have garnered first team honors. The duo also landed on the Patriot League's five-player All-Defensive Team.
The senior center Records leads the Patriot League and ranks sixth nationally in field goal percentage (.659) after posting a 25-point performance at Navy (2/25) to tie his career high. His 63.7 career field goal percentage ranks second in Patriot League history. The South Kingstown, R.I., native has seven career double-doubles including two this season.
Defensively, Richardson enters the week 15th nationally with 65 steals on the season. Records leads the team and ranks fourth in the Patriot League in blocks per game (1.1). Records also sits atop the team and inside the Patriot League's top 10 in rebounding at 6.1 boards per game.
Moffatt Earns First All-Patriot Honor
Moffatt grabs his first All-Patriot League selection with third team honors. The senior is averaging 10.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in another stellar campaign which has featured 14 games in double-figure scoring including a season-high 21 points during non-conference play against Duquesne (11/15).
Moffatt ranks third in Patriot League history in three-point field goal percentage (43.8) and is connecting on 45.2 percent of his attempts from deep this season. He has at least four made three-pointers in six games, including five 3-pointers and 19 points in a win over Loyola (1/30). Defensively, Moffatt is second on the team averaging 1.5 steals per game.
Smith Named to All-Rookie Team
Smith led all Patriot League freshmen with four Rookie of the Week honors and registered five 20-point games during the regular season. The Seattle native has 140 assists this season, surpassing the program's freshman record of 132 set by Richardson in 2018-19.
Smith has started every game this season while averaging 11.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. He scored a career-high 24 points at Lehigh (1/2) and posted a career-high nine assists in Colgate's league-opening win at Loyola (12/30). Smith has led the team in scoring six times, rebounding three times, and assisting 14 times. 2022-23 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men's Basketball Major Awards and All-League Teams
