Madness Begins for Men’s Basketball

HAMILTON – The madness begins Thursday night in Hamilton when third-seeded Colgate squares off with sixth-seeded Army in the Patriot League tournament quarterfinals. Tipoff from Cotterell Court is set for 7 p.m., and the game can be streamed live on ESPN+.

HAMILTON – The madness begins Thursday night in Hamilton when third-seeded Colgate squares off with sixth-seeded Army in the Patriot League tournament quarterfinals. Tipoff from Cotterell Court is set for 7 p.m., and the game can be streamed live on ESPN+. 

Colgate is hosting a Patriot League quarterfinal for the eighth year in a row and looking to regain momentum in March. The Raiders have won 12 consecutive tournament games against Patriot League opponents – a run that features four straight conference titles.

For Thursday's quarterfinal in Hamilton, the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free popcorn in a Colgate reusable popcorn bucket. The first 500 students to reserve their tickets will receive complimentary admission. 

Thursday's quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinal round on Sunday. Both semifinal matchups will broadcast live on CBS Sports Network at noon and 2 p.m.

Setting the Scene
 

  • Colgate and Army meet in the Patriot League quarterfinals Thursday at Cotterell Court. The Raiders, four-time defending Patriot League champions, are hosting a quarterfinal game for the eighth straight year.
  • Colgate and Army meet in the postseason for the first time since 2023 when the Raiders bested the Black Knights 91-73 in the semifinals.The Raiders are 3-1 in four postseason meetings against Army. 
  • The teams split the regular season with each team winning on its home floor. The Black Knights beat Colgate, 84-72, in West Point on Jan. 29. Colgate topped Army in the league opener, 71-59, at home on Jan. 2. 

Last Game Recap
 

  • American shot nearly 50 percent from the field and made 12 3-pointers in spoiling Colgate's senior day for the second straight year, 67-59, last Saturday at Cotterell Court. The Eagles became the first team since 2020 (Lafayette) to sweep Colgate in the regular season.
  • Chandler Baker led the team in scoring for the first time this season, finishing with 13 points. Jalen Cox scored 10 points, his seventh straight game in double figures.

Revisiting Army
 

  • Colgate and Army last met on Jan. 29, when the Black Knights held off the Raiders 84-72 in West Point to snap Colgate's 10-game winning streak in the head-to-head-series. 
  • The Raiders used the three-ball to build an early lead and then rode a 12-0 second-half run to pull away from Army 71-59 in the Patriot League opener on Jan. 2 at Cotterell Court. Jeff Woodward shined with 17 points and seven rebounds in the triumph. 

Head-to-Head Series Notes
 

  • Thursday's game marks the 141st meeting between the teams. The Raiders, who had a 10-game head-to-head win streak snapped in the previous meeting at Army, lead the all-time series 76-64.
  • Head Coach Matt Langel is 21-11 against Army, which has included a 14-3 run against the Black Knights since the 2018-19 season.

All-League Raiders
 

  • Fifth-year senior Jeff Woodward and sophomore Jalen Cox earned their first career Patriot League postseason honors this week. Woodward was named All-Patriot League Second Team, while Cox garnered All-Patriot League Third Team and All-Defensive Team laurels. 

Langel Chasing Milestone

  • Head Coach Matt Langel in his 14th season is tied with Fran O'Hanlon for the most Patriot League tournament wins all-time with 21.

  • Jeff Woodward scored in double figures in 16 of 18 Patriot League games, including four 20-point showings and five double-doubles. He ranks sixth in the league in points per game (16.1), fourth in rebounding (8.1), and second in field goal percentage (.650).

Jalen Has the Hot Hand

  • Jalen Cox has reached double-figure scoring in seven straight games. He ranks fifth in the PL in assists per game (3.9), fifth in steals (1.7), eighth in assist-turnover ratio (1:4), and ninth in FG percentage (.540).
