UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Colgate battled to a 14-9 defeat in its season opener at #14 Penn State Saturday afternoon.

COACH KARWECK'S COMMENTS
"Hats off to Penn State, they are a good, talented, well-coached team.

Simply put, I didn't do a good enough job getting our guys ready to win this type of game.

Our energy was good, our focus was there, our sideline was fired up, and our game plan was solid. My job is to make adjustments quicker and recognize advantages earlier, and I just didn't make those decisions quickly enough.

The good news is that we did a lot of really good things that we will take into Virginia next weekend. Some of the best lessons are from losses, and we'll get better from this one."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Following two Penn State goals, Jack Turner notched the Raiders' first of the season with 2:07 remaining in the first. Kyle Rummel won the pursuing faceoff and took it to the house, knotting the score at 2-2.
  • PSU started the second on a 4-1 run. Turner found the back of the net between two back-to-back goal runs by the Nittany Lions.
  • Rory Connor fired in his first of the season at the 6:37 mark of the second, making it 6-4 PSU.
  • Following two more goals by Penn State, Liam Connor scored to cut the deficit to three at 8-5. PSU tacked on two more, taking a 10-5 lead into the halftime break.
  • The teams exchanged blows at the start of the third. Hunter Drouin got on the scoresheet with 12:21 remaining, making it 11-6.
  • Colgate outscored Penn State 3-1 in the fourth. The Raiders logged back-to-back man-up goals, first from Liam Connor with 10:24 left, followed by Drouin recording his second of the contest at the 4:48 mark, cutting it to a six-goal game at 14-8.
  • Liam Connor completed his hat trick with just under three minutes to play.
