Men’s Tennis Falls to Binghamton 4-3
Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Colgate fell to Binghamton Sunday night inside Drumlins Country Club, dropping a close battle, 4-3. The Raiders lost the doubles point, but the back half of the singles lineup rallied to give the squad a chance to pull off the comeback.
"That was a high quality tennis match that was legitimately down to a point," head coach Bobby Pennington said. "It goes to show yet again just how critical the doubles point is and we have to improve this as soon as possible. Kudos to Graham, Viding, and Falcon for winning four through six singles. Sadly we lost such a tough doubles point and one through three singles. Last year we got thumped by Binghamton, who then won their league and went to the NCAA tournament. We got our depth and culture back, and all we are missing is the doubles. Bring on Mercyhurst."
The action started with doubles, where the Raiders picked up a quick victory at line three where sophomores Jerome Falcon and Parker McGowan won 6-1. With the triumph, the duo extends their overall record to 3-0 on the season.
However, line one shortly followed with a loss, and junior Aidan Chung and first year Tim Viding fell narrowly, 6-4, to seal the doubles point for the Bearcats.
Colgate would bounce back right away with Viding picking up a 6-3, 6-1 victory at line five singles to tie the match at one apiece. However, Binghamton quickly responded with wins on courts one and two to take a 3-1 lead.
Senior Ben Graham brought the Raiders back within striking distance, comfortably picking up his second-straight win on court four, 6-3, 6-2. Binghamton would take the fourth match they needed at line three singles when junior Aidan Lee lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in a tightly-contested battle. Falcon would finish the match on a high note for Colgate, winning 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
The Raiders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8, where they will take on Mercyhurst at 4 p.m. in Erie, Pa. They will next return to Drumlins on Sunday, Feb 9, for a matchup with LeMoyne at 2 p.m.
