Men’s Tennis Defeats Rochester
Box Score HAMILTON – The men's tennis team improved to 4-2 overall on the season with a 6-1 win over Rochester on Sunday inside Sanford Fieldhouse. The day was dedicated to the team's annual heart awareness match, and the Raiders swept doubles and won five out of six singles matches.
"Another tremendously successful heart awareness match today on all fronts," said head coach Bobby Pennington. "We had a packed house, raised a lot of money for such a special, personal cause in children's heart awareness."
"Our men are now riding a three-match winning streak heading into Lehigh. Excellent doubles, five of the top six won in singles, and we now have four guys with 5-1 records in singles in Israel, Viding, Falcon, and Graham. We also got Vlassis back on track which is huge. We have waited nearly a year to play Lehigh and it's time."
Colgate opened up doubles action quickly taking courts two and three, with junior Aidan Chung and first-year Tim Viding winning 6-1, and sophomores Jerome Falcon and Parker McGowan taking their contest by the same score. The Raiders completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 triumph from senior captains Josh Israel and Benito Vlassis at line one.
The Raiders continued their momentum with Vlassis quickly winning 6-2, 6-0 at line one singles, followed shortly by senior captain Ben Graham winning 6-2, 6-3 on court four. Junior Aidan Lee fell at line three, but the rest of the Raiders came through, as Israel, Falcon, and Viding all won their singles matches to ensure a comfortable win for the squad.
The Raiders return to action on Sunday, Feb. 23, for their first Patriot League matchup of the season against Lehigh. The match will take place inside Drumlins Country Club at 4 p.m.
