Men’s Tennis Falls to Army, 4-2
LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Colgate men's tennis team fell to Army 4-2 on Friday afternoon, in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Championships. The Raiders dropped a tight doubles point, then battled back to pick up two singles wins, but the Black Knights took the three singles matches they needed to win.
"That was an incredibly hard-fought battle to, unfortunately, end an incredible season," said Head Coach Bobby Pennington. "We came out and played lights out to win at No. 1 doubles 6-1. Two doubles had an off day, and we typically love our chances at three doubles as they are 16 -4. Sadly we came up just short. Singles was an absolute bloodbath with Jerome and Lee winning in straight sets. We had the momentum and the match turned when Josh and Lochlan simultaneously went to a third set. Sadly we came up just short. We could have definitely used more reps outside leading up to the tournament. Overall, Colgate Men's Tennis is back with the play and culture. Benito, Josh, Mikey, and BG will be missed."
The Raiders came out firing in doubles, with the senior captain duo of Josh Israel and Benito Vlassis winning 6-1 at line one. However, the Black Knights quickly responded with a 6-2 win over first-year Tim Viding and junior Aidan Chung at line two. It all came down to line three, where the sophomore duo of Parker McGowan and Jerome Falcon battled back from being down 2-5 to level the set at 5-5, but ended up losing 7-5 for Army to take the doubles point.
Colgate immediately leveled the matchup with Falcon at line six, who won 6-1, 6-2 dominantly. The Black Knights responded with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Vlassis at line one. However, the Raiders again would level the matchup at two points apiece with junior Aidan Lee winning 6-3, 6-2 at line three. However, it would be all Army from there, as senior captain Ben Graham fell 6-2, 6-4 at line five, followed by first-year Lochlan Seth losing 4-6, 6-0, 2-6 to clinch the matchup for the Black Knights. Israel was in a third set when the play was called.
That is the end of the season for the squad, which finished with a 12-9 overall record, much improved from the past two seasons.
