Men’s Tennis Triumphs Over Sacred Heart
Box Score FAIRFIELD — The Colgate men's tennis team finished their road trip strong with a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart. Junior Aidan Chung and first-year Tim Viding came back from 2-5 down to clinch the doubles point for the Raiders, and senior captain Josh Israel won at four singles 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the overall matchup for Colgate.
"Incredible match from the boys today against a very solid Sacred Heart team," said assistant coach Jake Sandler. "Another wild doubles point down 2-5 at No. 2, and they come back to win it in a thrilling breaker. Shout out to Rome and Loch for another impressive win, taking care of business in straight sets. It all came down to senior captain Josh Israel, who clutched it up and brought it home for the boys. Excited to head into the heart of conference play with some major momentum."
The match began with doubles, where the sophomore duo of Parker McGowan and Jerome Falcon immediately gave the Raiders the lead with a 6-0 blowout at line three. Colgate fell at line one doubles, but Chung and Viding came up clutch, winning 7-6 (7-2) at line two to clinch the point.
Singles action followed, where the Pioneers clawed back into the match with wins at lines two and five over junior Aidan Lee and senior captain Ben Graham, respectively. Falcon leveled the contest with a 6-3, 6-4 win at line six, and first-year Lochlan Seth used that momentum to tack on a 6-4, 6-4 win at line four to give the Raiders the lead again. Israel clinched the match for the squad with his victory, but the Pioneers were able to tack on a consolation win at line one against senior captain Benito Vlassis.
The Raiders return to action on Saturday, taking on conference opponent Loyola at 2 p.m. at the J.W. Abrahamson tennis courts in Hamilton.
