Women's Basketball Collects Third Straight
HAMILTON - Morgan McMahon netted a season-high 20 points as the Raiders beat Navy 62-54 at Cotterell Court on Wednesday.
After Navy cut the Colgate lead to two points with a one minute on the clock, Anne Bair was fouled with the Raiders in the bonus. Bair hit both free throws to take a 56-52 lead.
The Mids responded with a mid range jumper to again cut the Raiders lead to just two points. Coming out of a Colgate timeout, Morgan McMahon spun off her defender towards the baseline and threaded a bounce pass into the path of Madison Schiller who finished the layup to put the Raiders back up two possessions with 23 seconds left.
Navy took a deep 3-point attempt on the ensuing possession that fell short and into the hands of Christina Midgette who was fouled and sent to the line. Midgette hit both from the charity stripe and all but secured the victory for the Raiders.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Christina Midgette started the game with a tough finish down low before Navy responded with two straight buckets to take an early 4-2 lead.
- Madison Schiller hit a triple to get the Raiders within one, but the Mids rattled off six unanswered to push their advantage to 12-5.
- Morgan McMahon drilled a deep 3-pointer and Taylor Golembiewski hit a jumper to get the Raiders back to within one score.
- McMahon hit a jumper at the end of the first quarter as the Raiders trailed 19-14 after one quarter.
- Colgate came out in the second quarter scoring five straight to tie the game at 19 apiece.
- Schiller drained a triple to give the Raiders a 22-19 lead but the Mids responded with a seven-point surge to regain the lead.
- McMahon continued to dominate, netting four straight with under two minutes left in the half.
- Okafor made one free throw to give Colgate a 29-28 lead at the halftime break.
- Sophia Diehl finished a layup before hitting a jumper to start the second half and put the Raiders ahead 33-31.
- Navy went on a 9-0 run in the middle of the third quarter to take a 37-33 lead.
- Anne Bair drained a spin around lay-in with under a minute left in the third quarter to cut the Colgate deficit to just three points heading into the final frame.
- Taylor Golembiewski was able to drive inside and finish through contact for the old-fashioned 3-point play. Navy was given a technical foul and Golembiewski made both free throws to give Colgate the 44-42 lead.
- Christina Midgette grabbed a huge board and finished the put back to give the Raiders a 48-42 lead with just under five minutes to play.
- McMahon drained a tough up and under layup to give Colgate a 52-49 lead with just under three minutes in the game.
