WORCESTER, Mass. – Four boats represented the Colgate women's rowing team in two races against Holy Cross and Smith on Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond.

"This was our first time going 2,000 meters this season," said head coach Jim Lister. "To do it twice today was a great challenge for our team that we readily accepted. We knew the wind would be another opponent but we prepared for it and responded well. 

"Holy Cross' early-season results revealed that they were going to be a fast team. The goal for us was to see how we stack up. For our varsity eight to finish within a second from Holy Cross shows me all the hard work that we've put in and we have a varsity eight that's moving quite well. Our varsity four was leading most of the way and the wind conditions just became challenging, moving us to another close second-place finish."

In the first race, Colgate's 1V8 and 1V4 boats captured second place finishes, while its 2V8 finished third and the 3V8 placed fourth. The varsity eight set the tone with a time of 7:09.8, besting Smith's time of 7:24.5 and trailing only first-place Holy Cross' first-place time of 7:08.9. 

Colgate's varsity four placed second with a time of 7:36.4, just behind Holy Cross' A clip of 7:35.9 and well ahead of the Crusaders' B time of 7:45.9. The Raiders' 2V8 finished with a time of 7:43.7 and their 3V8 clocked in at 8:50.1.

All four Colgate boats finished runner-up in the second race of the day. Colgate's 1V8 clocked in at 7:31.7, just behind Holy Cross' time of 7:22.2. The 1V4 once again turned in a close second-place finish with a time of 8:19.2, trailing the Crusaders' time of 8:15.9.
