Softball Falters on Day One of Kickoff Classic
PHOENIX — Colgate softball suffered two setbacks on opening day of the 2025 season, falling to Montana, 11-4, and Grand Canyon, 8-0, on day one of the Kickoff Classic. Senior Alexis Romero led the way for the Raiders hitting .500 and launching her first-career home run, while classmate Quinn Livesay also added a pair of base knocks across both games.
GAME 1 - Colgate 4, Montana 11
Despite rookie Mikala Ham striking out the side in her first-career start, the Raiders fell behind 4-0 after the top of the first with Montana adding another score in the ensuing inning.
In the top of the fourth, Ham again found herself in a jam with a runner on second and no outs, and a ground ball and a strikeout were not enough to get out of the inning when Montana tacked on two more runs after a nine-pitch at-bat fell in favor of the Griz.
Montana added another tally in the top of the fifth, but sophomore Alexa Acker launched her first-ever home run, a three-run shot, to put the Raiders on the board at 8-3. Two more runs went in favor of the Griz before Romero sent a homer to left center, but Montana would hold on to hand the Raiders their first loss of 2025.
GAME 2 - Colgate 0, Grand Canyon 8
Acker broke up GCU's perfect game with a walk in the top of the second, but a Colgate error in the bottom of the inning allowed four runs to cross home plate.
The home side extended a 5-0 lead in the third inning before a three-run fourth put the mercy rule into effect heading into the top of the fifth, where the Raiders' bats were silenced to end the contest early.
