Three By Lawrence Lek: Geomancer, Black Cloud, Empty Rider

Thursday, October 2, 2025 7:00–8:00 PM

Description

This curated program presents three short works from Lek's ongoing Sinofuturist universe, an interwoven series of animated films and video games that explore questions of identity, agency, and emotion in the age of AI. Set in Singapore on the eve of the island nation’s centennial in 2065, Geomancer tells the story of an environmental satellite that wishes to become an artist. Black Cloud follows a lone surveillance AI as they confront their existential crisis while watching over the streets of the abandoned smart city of SimBeijing. And in Empty Rider, the sentient self-driving car Vanguard-3181 stands trial for attempting to murder their parent company’s CEO.Co-sponsored by Asian Studies, Department of Philosophy, Department of Computer Science, and Core Conversations
