This workshop aims to equip participants with a new tool aid to their problem solving toolkits: the LARA Method. Whether it is trying to become a more engaged listener, facilitating constructive dialogue, or trying to de-escalate sensitive topics the LARA method is a fantastically simple way to approach empathic listening. With the LARA method, we hope to minimize misunderstandings and create productive and sustained dialogue across differences.Presenters: Koko Nagatomo (she/her), Xose Agbadan (she/her) Koko Nagatomo, she/her, class of 2027. Koko was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM. She is an InterGroup Dialogue (IGD) Intern at the ALANA Cultural Center and is currently pursuing a major in biology and a minor in Spanish. When she's not caught up in academics, Koko is busy running the Japan club or busy cooking.Xose Agbadan, she/her/hers, class of 2025. Xose grew up in Elkins Park, PA. She is a geography/theater major while also working as an InterGroup Dialogue (IGD) Intern. Xose is a passionate lover of beaches and an aspiring urbanist and city planner.

From the farmer planting seeds to the consumers plates, post-colonial structures severed many ties between the people and their food systems. Global food supply chains flourished by subjecting people in the global south to exploitative food production. Simultaneously, people in the global north have become more reliant on grocery stores and processed foods, further unequal access to healthy options. Food Justice and Food Sovereignty aims to break this cycle, centering one’s right to health and culturally relevant food through sustainable practices. This talk will look at how different scales of food justice help rebuild community connections to their food systems while also being a potential climate solution. To provoke questions about our own food systems, we will also discuss resources that encourage action beyond the talk.Presenter: Sarafina Glaricia Lewis (she/her) Sarafina Glaricia Lewis, she/her/hers, class 2025, is a Haitian American from Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY. She is a double major in Africana and Latin American Studies and environmental studies. By combining the two, she has centered her studies around food justice. She loves her family, friends, and building community along with plants she tends to at the Colgate Greenhouse. Her love for building community has allowed her to possess various leadership positions at Colgate such as freshman representative for the Caribbean Student Association, social media chair and chairwoman for Sisters Of the Round Table, and currently the educational director for Black Student Union and one of Colgate Hunger Outreach Program (CHOP) students leaders.

Featuring members of the Colgate Athletic Department and student-athletes representing Raiders of Color Connect, this session will focus on what it means to be a student-athlete of color at a PWI. The panelists will talk about their own personal experiences, while also delving into why athletics is such a hotspot for social justice movements. Participants will walk away understanding a bit more about what it means to be a student-athlete at Colgate, why we see professional and amateur athletes use their voices for good, and how our student-athletes can continue to use their platform.

Join us for Backpacks for Kids: Making a Difference for Refugee Families, where we’ll share what our organization is all about and the impact we’re working to create. We’ll talk about why we started Backpacks for Kids, the challenges refugee families face, and how something as simple as a backpack can make a big difference. This is a chance to hear real stories, learn how we’re supporting kids in our community, and find out how you can help us make an even bigger impact.Presenter: Kelly Ribeiro (she/her) Kelly Ribeiro (she/her), class of 2027, is from Lyndhurst, NJ. Kelly is a psychological science major, and is one of the co-founders of the organization Backpack for Kids.
