Activism as an International Student delves into the distinct challenges and transformative opportunities international students encounter while advocating for social change. It examines how cultural diversity, restrictive visa regulations, and the complexities of navigating unfamiliar systems in the United States uniquely shape their activism. By spotlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of international student advocates, the session seeks to empower participants to amplify their voices, drive meaningful change, and strategically balance their activism with academic and immigration responsibilities.Presenters: Amari Simpson (he/they) Kerra Hunter (she/her)
Amari Simpson (he/they) joined Colgate in 2023 as the Director for Diversity and Equity after many years in higher education. In his work, Amari also focuses on supporting Colgate’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives through DEIB professional development, strategic planning, and consultation. Before starting at Colgate, Amari worked at SUNY Brockport, the University of Rochester, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Middlebury College. Amari earned a bachelor of arts in psychology from Middlebury, a master of education degree from Boston University, and a PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.Kerra Hunter (she/her) joined Colgate in 2012, and is currently the Associate Dean and Director of International Student Services. Kerra’s work focuses on supporting international students at Colgate University. During her time at Colgate she has led the Office of Residential Life and ALANA Cultural Center as director prior to her work with international students at Colgate. Before starting at Colgate, Kerra worked at Salisbury University and Rutgers University. Kerra earned a bachelor of arts in journalism and geology from Rutgers and a master of education degree from Salisbury. She is originally from Spanish Town, Jamaica.
