#5 Colgate Outlasts #6 Clarkson in ECAC Thriller

POTSDAM, N.Y. — Sophomore Emma Pais scored twice and senior Hannah Murphy made 35 saves as No. 5 Colgate prevailed against No. 6 Clarkson, 4-2, in an instant classic inside Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

POTSDAM, N.Y. Sophomore Emma Pais scored twice and senior Hannah Murphy made 35 saves as No. 5 Colgate prevailed against No. 6 Clarkson, 4-2, in an instant classic inside Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

The Raiders saw their top two centers ejected from the game and were outshot 37-18, but they never trailed in a gutsy league win on the road.

"I'm incredibly proud of our effort and our team's collective spirit this evening," head coach Stefan Decosse said. "This was an incredible response and a real gutsy effort from the group. They should be proud of the way they showed up and performed against a really strong Clarkson team."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A nearly anticlimactic first period saw little action until fifth-year Kristýna Kaltounková was slapped with a game misconduct and ejected with 40 seconds remaining in the frame.
  • Unphased, Pais collected a puck in Clarkson's offensive zone that was jarred loose at the point by junior Sara Stewart, and the sophomore went coast to coast for Colgate's first shorthanded score of the season with just 10 seconds before intermission.
  • The Golden Knights struck back at the start of the second on the ensuing five-minute major.
  • Stewart would put the Raiders in front for good at the 11-minute mark of the second, shoveling in a puck from just outside the crease off the silky assist from sophomore Madeline Palumbo.
  • With time winding down in the middle period, sophomore Kaia Malachino went to her backhand to beat Clarkson's netminder for her 13th goal of the season, doubling Colgate's advantage.
  • The home side answered, however, clawing within one score heading into the final frame.
  • Pais opened the third period with her second goal of the night, this time on the power play, shifting a Clarkson defender at the blue line before picking her spot just inside the far right pipe.
  • What looked to be smooth sailing for the Raiders was disrupted by another game misconduct, this time assessed to senior Neena Brick, who was ejected at the 13:25 mark of the third.
  • Murphy made six of her 11 third-period saves on the following five-minute major, stopping one final shot attempt with Clarkson's net empty to seal Colgate's fourth ranked win of the season.

GAME NOTES

  • Pais scored Colgate's first shorthanded goal of the season in the first period, and tied Kaltounková for most power-play goals on the team (5) with her third-period woman-up snipe.
  • Biederman stretched her point streak to a team-high 10 games.
  • Palumbo led Colgate with seven shots on the evening, marking her second-straight outing leading the team in that category.
  • Murphy added her 11th career 30+ save game and her fifth of the 2024-25 season.
  • Stewart logged her sixth multi-point outing of the year and the eighth of her career in the win.
