Women’s Tennis Defeats Providence
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The women's tennis team defeated Providence Saturday afternoon as they rode the momentum of a doubles sweep to a 6-1 overall victory.
"Another really impressive win for the ladies today for three in a row" said head coach Bobby Pennington. "Incredible what a difference a year makes as they beat us last year 4-3. We looked incredible and elite in doubles winning and sweeping our fourth straight doubles point. In singles five of the top six won in straight sets. That takes us to our typical winning record and ready for league play versus Boston tomorrow."
The Raiders opened up with doubles action, where they swept the Friars on all three courts. At line three, first-year Rebecca Hess and senior captain Addie Eklund won, 6-1. Lines one and two shortly followed with wins, as junior Amelia Galin and sophomore Sophia Montero teamed up at line one, and senior captain Eliza Podlas and Carina Cristobal won at line two, both teams winning 6-2.
Colgate continued to dominate taking five of the six singles. Junior Sasha Herman doubled the lead for the Raiders, winning 6-2, 6-1 at line five singles. Eklund added onto the lead with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph at line four.
Galin and Montero clinched the match for the Raiders, with Galin winning 7-5, 6-4, and Montero winning 6-3, 6-3. Hess added onto the lead with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court six. The Raiders' only loss came at court three, as first-year Anya Kunar lost 5-7, 6-1, (8-10).
The Raiders return to action on Sunday, where they will travel to Boston to take on Boston University at 1 p.m.
