Varsity Eight Takes Gold in Saratoga
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Colgate women's rowing sent four boats to compete against other northeast crews at the New York State Collegiate Championships in Saratoga Springs.
Heats
Colgate's 1V8 clocked in at 7:31.71, earning first in their heat and fourth overall after Syracuse, Bates, and Ithaca.
The Raider's 2V8 crossed the finish line second at 7:56.472, falling by two seconds to William Smith and taking fourth overall. The crew will face tight competition with William Smith and Marist in the final as all three times were within seconds of one another.
Colgate's 1V4 earned a first place finish in their heat, securing a time of 8:48.85. Similar to the 1V8 and 2V8, the crew took fourth out of the 13 entries, bested by Syracuse, UAlbany, and Marist. All crews advanced to their respective finals later in the afternoon.
Due to only having four entries in the event, Colgate's 2V4 did not race in a heat, but instead faced Marist, Nazareth, and Union directly in the final.
Finals
Colgate's 2V4 competed in their final first, earning second with a time of 8:27.504. The crew will be the first to podium for Colgate, beating out Marist by five seconds and Nazareth by 55. Union took first in the final with a time of 8:22.5.
The Raiders' 1V8 came out successful as they earned first overall, posting a winning time of 7:01.440. The boat beat out Syracuse, who had recently been awarded the No. 10 spot on the CRCA Coaches Poll, along with crews from Bates, Ithaca, Marist, and William Smith.
The 2V8 secured a time of 7:30.636 putting them fifth overall in their final. Colgate fell to crews from Marist, who crossed the line first at 7:16.85, followed by Bates, Smith, and William Smith.
Colgate's 1V4 rounded out the day with a time of 8:31.921, placing fifth in their final. The varsity four was bested by other fours from Syracuse, Marist, UAlbany, and Binghamton.
