Women’s Tennis Downed by Midshipmen
Box Score SYRACUSE — The Colgate women's tennis team fell to Navy on Saturday afternoon, dropping the matchup 6-1. The Raider's sole point came from sophomore Sophia Montero at line two, who won 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). The loss puts the squad at 10-8 on the year.
"You can see why Navy won the league for women last season," said Head Coach Bobby Pennington. "We played incredibly well at third doubles, with Rebecca and Addie getting it done. Our top two, with Amelia playing the player of the year so close and Sophia winning in straight sets were beyond elite impressive performances. We have four league matches left, and they are all huge."
The match began with doubles action, where the Mids won at lines one and two to clinch the point. Senior captain Addie Eklund and first-year Rebecca Hess triumphed 6-3 at line three to avoid the doubles sweep for the Raiders.
Singles action followed shortly, where the Mids quickly took courts three through six to take a commanding lead in the matchup. Junior Amelia Galin played the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year close at line one singles, falling 6-3, 7-5. Montero finished the match with her victory at line two to avoid the sweep for Colgate.
The Raiders return to action on Saturday, taking on conference foes Loyola at 10 a.m. at the J.W. Abrahamson tennis courts in Hamilton.
