Colgate Volleyball Picked First in Preseason Poll; Bayless Earns Top Honor
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Colgate University women's volleyball team has been predicted to finish atop the Patriot League, according to the 2025 preseason poll. In addition to the team's top ranking, rising junior Milan Bayless has been named the 2025 Patriot League Preseason Women's Volleyball Player of the Year.
The Raiders garnered eight first-place votes. Trailing behind the Patriot League Champions are Army, followed closely by longtime rival Bucknell.
"We need to be focused on the process," said head coach Ryan Baker. "While polls are exciting, we won't spend much time talking about them. To me, they are based upon past success and not what's important for this team. Our team has to stay competitive, healthy, and together for what will be a long and tough season. I know we will rise to the challenge.
There is strength in numbers, as the program returns 13 players and adds five newcomers to the roster. To build upon their historic four-peat run, the Raiders will need to rely on their fundamentals.
"We will rely on our upperclass to lead the way in this area," Baker added. "The good news is we have a lot of players who have experienced what it takes to be in the running for a championship. They know what practice needs to look and feel like on a daily basis. Championships are the result of daily habits."
Among the returners, the 2024 Patriot League Player of the Year has already earned preseason honors.
Bayless's recognition as preseason player of the year comes on the heels of an impressive 2024 season, where she earned multiple accolades. Her performance was integral in leading Colgate to its fourth consecutive conference championship, reflecting both her individual skill and her contribution to the team's ongoing success.
"Milan has done the work that's necessary to be ready for this season," said Baker. "While some players get a little complacent after last year's accolades, Milan has done the opposite. She needs to trust her training, play freely, and let her play and personality lead."
With the countdown underway, the Raiders will embark on the 2025 season in Fort Collins, Colorado, facing the Colorado State Rams on August 29 at 6 p.m.
