Women’s Tennis Triumphs in Opener
Box Score EASTON, Mass. – After losing the doubles point to Stonehill, Colgate dominated singles play to claim its first win of the season with a 5-2 triumph on the road.
"After dropping a tough, flat doubles point, the ladies came out firing in singles with Galin, Montero and Eklund putting three points on the board," head coach Bobby Pennington said. "Herman and Hess brought it home for us. The ladies have so much talent and depth and in sports you don't luck into five straight winning seasons. These are the gritty, tough wins you can't put a price on. Bring on URI."
The Raiders fell to Stonehill at lines one and three, but junior Sasha Herman and sophomore Carina Cristobal fought to a 7-5 victory on court two.
After falling behind 1-0, the Raiders took off and never looked back, starting with junior Amelia Galin who won her line one singles match 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
Senior captain Addie Eklund then won in dominating fashion, 6-1 6-2, on court three.
Sophomore Sophia Montero came up with an incredible comeback in second singles, winning 3-6, 7-5, (10-7). After a loss at line four, the Raiders won the final two contests, where Herman clinched the match with a 7-5 6-1 victory at line five, followed shortly by first-year Rebecca Hess who won 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
The Raiders return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. with a showdown against the University of Rhode Island at Drumlins Country Club.
