Men's Rowing Sends Pair of Boats to Finals
CAMDEN, N.J. — Colgate men's rowing traveled to the Cooper River to compete at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.
CAMDEN, N.J. — Colgate men's rowing traveled to the Cooper River to compete at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta and the Atlantic Sprints, with its second varsity four taking fourth in the grand final Saturday.
FINALS
SECOND VARSITY FOUR- The Raiders' second varsity four launched first for the day, placing fourth in the grand final, posting a time of 6:58.102.
- Rollins, Stetson, and Drexel dominated the rest of the field early and gained open water within the first 1000 meters of the race.
- Colgate closed the gap steadily on Stetson with a strong sprint for that third-place position, but ultimately fell to the other crew as they ran out of water.
- Rollins took first and crossed the finish line in 6:48.048, followed by Drexel and Stetson.
VARSITY EIGHT
- Colgate trailed behind the rest of the crews in the petite final, finishing with a time of 5:58.999.
- The petite final started strong for all six crews as there was overlap to fight for the top three positions.
- The crews managed to make it a five-boat race by the 1000-meter mark, excluding Delaware, which dropped off slightly.
- By the 1500-meter mark, Jacksonville, Marist, and Western Ontario pushed ahead to take the lead over the rest of the boats. Delaware also managed to surge back into contention for the top-three slots with a powerful move.
- The final 250 had tight margins between each of the competitors, but Western Ontario crossed first with a time of 5:52.171. The boat was followed by Marist, Loyola, Delaware, Jacksonville, and Colgate.
- All crews finished within six seconds of each other.
SEMIFINALS
SECOND VARSITY FOUR- The Raiders' second varsity four took to the water first in their semifinal, placing second with a time of 7:15.877 and earning a spot in the grand finals tomorrow.
- Rollins took an early open water lead, with Colgate and Catholic competing for the second-place position.
- Colgate managed to endure the challenge Catholic gave it, pushing to an open water lead and closing the gap on Rollins.
- The boat fell to Rollins as they crossed 10 seconds after at 7:15.877. The crew crossed 11 seconds ahead of Catholic and 21 seconds ahead of Pittsburgh.
- The Raiders will face Rollins, Catholic, Drexel, Stetson, and Loyola in lane five of the men's second varsity four grand final for the Ken Shaw trophy.
- Colgate's varsity fell in the semifinal, finishing after the rest of the field, recording a time of 5:57.400. They will compete in the petite final of the men's varsity eight category tomorrow.
- While Temple took an early lead over the rest of the field, Colgate faced tight competition for one of the top three positions to qualify for the grand final.
- The Raiders fell to Delaware by one second, Marist by three, and Steson and St. Joseph's by six. Temple held their lead over the other crews to cross the finish first, posting a time of 5:46.836.
- Colgate will meet Marist and Delaware for the second time this weekend in the petite final.
TIME TRIALS
- Colgate's second varsity four attacked their time trial first, placing fourth overall, finishing in 7:15.972. Rollins took the first overall, crossing at 7:03.93, followed by Drexel and Stetson. The crew faced Catholic, Rollins, and Pittsburgh in the first semifinal of the event.
- The varsity eight fell at the ninth spot, clocking in at 5:43.440. The event was topped by Temple, which crossed the line at 5:31.704. Colgate faced tough competition as they faced Temple in the first semifinal of the event, along with Marist, St Joseph's, Delaware, and Stetson.
