Colgate Unable to Overcome Slow Start at Loyola
BALTIMORE – Loyola made 10 3-pointers in the first half (10-17) to build a double-digit lead it never relinquished in an 84-65 decision Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 11-16 overall and 6-10 in Patriot League play. Colgate meanwhile dipped to 12-17 and 9-7 with two regular season games remaining. Jacob Theodosiou led all scorers with 22 points and 6-of-9 made three-point baskets.
COACH LANGEL'S COMMENTS
"Credit Loyola. They executed a game plan. They were mentally and physically ready, and they did shoot really well. A number of their offensive possessions were not defended the way that we had talked about in preparation for the game. We didn't have the toughness, togetherness, and intelligence that it requires to come back in a game like this. We fought pretty hard to cut it to 10 in the second half, but in a deficit like we had, the margin for error is really small. Certain things are out of our reach now but we will try to play as well as we can to build up for the postseason." HOW IT HAPPENED
- Colgate got off to a sluggish start and never recovered. Loyola scored the first seven points and later used another 7-0 run to open a 26-11 lead capped by a 3-pointer from Milos Ilic eight minutes in.
- Jalen Cox made a couple shifty moves for tough buckets on consecutive possessions but his supporting cast was limited and Loyola took advantage. Theodosiou had two 3-pointers – both in transition off Colgate turnovers – in an 8-0 surge that gave Loyola a commanding 37-16 lead.
- The Greyhounds as a team were unconscious from behind the arc, led by five from Theodosiou (5-7), shooting 58.8 percent from long range (10-17) to lead 46-28 at the intermission.
- Colgate's best surge came in a 9-0 run after back-to-back layups from Julian Scott cut the margin to 59-49 midway through the second half. The momentum was short lived, however, as the Greyhounds countered with 10 unanswered points and held their double-digit lead to the wire in the 84-65 final score.
GAME NOTES
- Jeff Woodward, who was coming off back-to-back 20-point games, saw his streak of consecutive games in double figures end at 15 games – a streak that spanned all of conference play.
- Colgate's eight-game head-to-head win streak against Loyola was snapped in the defeat.
- Nicolas Louis-Jacques led the team in scoring for the 10th time this season with 13 points.
- Chandler Baker recorded his fourth start of the season.
