Men’s Basketball Rallies Past Loyola, 82-68
HAMILTON – Colgate scored a season-high 57 points in the second half, turning a nine-point halftime deficit into an 82-68 victory over Loyola to snap its four-game skid Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court.
Jalen Cox finished with 22 points, 10 assists, and five steals – all career-high marks – against just two turnovers along with an efficient 7-of-10 shooting performance from the field. He led four Raiders in double figures, followed by Nicolas Louis-Jacques (19), Jeff Woodward (17), and Brady Cummins (11).
Colgate trailed for the entire second half before making a late championship charge. Louis-Jacques swished his fourth 3-pointer of the game to put the Raiders in front for good, 62-59, with 4:12 left in regulation. That sparked a 23-9 Colgate run over the final four-plus minutes to seal the Raiders' victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Colgate started 3-for-4 from behind the arc in the first four minutes. Cox, Louis-Jacques, and Cummins all connected from long range to give Colgate an early five-point lead, 10-5.
- Loyola went stride for stride with Colgate's fast start and eventually took the lead with a 6-0 run late in the opening frame, and then closed the first 20 minutes on an 8-0 surge to build a nine-point lead. Colgate did not score for the final 3:24 of the first half and trailed 34-25 at the intermission.
- After starting 3-for-4 from behind the arc, Colgate missed its next 13 attempts from behind the arc until Louis-Jacques ended the spell with his first of three treys in the second half cutting the deficit to 46-44. His second trey once again cut it to a two-point deficit, 49-47, with 9:09 to go.
- The Raiders kept chipping away but had to work around a career-high 32 points from Jacob Theodosiou. Sam Wright connected on a trey to give Colgate its first lead since early in the first half, 59-56, before Theodosiou canned a 3-pointer on the other end to tie things up 59-59 with 4:33 left.
- Louis-Jacques' third 3-pointer of the second half and fourth for the game finally gave the Raiders the lead for good, 62-59, with 4:12 left. Cox had four steals in the backcourt over the final 3:11 in regulation to help the Raiders lead by as many as 15 points down the stretch.
GAME NOTES
- Jalen Cox's career-high 22 points eclipsed his previous-high 21 set earlier this season at Syracuse.
- Jeff Woodward grabbed 10 rebounds along with his 17 points to earn his third double-double.
- Two Raiders earned a double-double in the same game for the first time since Jan. 8, 2024 vs Lehigh.
- Colgate is now 3-12 this season when trailing at halftime.
- The Raiders' 57 points scored in the second half were their most in any frame this season, besting the 53-point opening stanza against Boston University.
