Raiders Battle Back and Tie Pioneers

HAMILTON — Colgate and Sacred Heart skated to a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon.

HAMILTON — Colgate and Sacred Heart skated to a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers scored three straight goals in the second period to pull ahead 3-1, but the Raiders fought back to draw even.

Ben Raymond put Colgate ahead 1-0 just under seven minutes into the first. Tommy Bergsland picked the puck up in the corner behind the Raiders' goal and passed it to Alex DiPaolo. The senior then played a long diagonal pass to his classmate. Raymond skated in and snuck a shot past the Pioneers' netminder.

After being held scoreless for over half the game, SHU found the back of the net three times in less than five minutes to take a two-goal lead.

The Pioneers tied the score at 1-1 with 7:20 left in the middle frame. Tyler Ghirardosi forced a costly Raider turnover, deflecting a pass behind Colgate's goal. The puck landed at the stick of Matthew Guerra, who fired it home.

Just over four minutes later, John Driscoll gave SHU its first lead. Mike Adamson passed to Ghirardosi, who took a shot that got saved, but he followed his rebound before making a short pass to Driscoll for a shot he rifled into the back of the net.

Felix Trudeau then pushed the visitors' lead to two with just over two and a half minutes left, scoring off assists from Gabe Blanchard and Max Dorrington.

Antonio Fernandez got one back with 49 seconds remaining in the second, notching his second goal of the season. Simon Labelle tried to fire a shot on goal that got deflected and collected by Jake Schneider. The sophomore wrapped around the goal before playing a pass to Fernandez, who skated from the left side into the center of the ice before ripping a low shot from just past the blueline that found its way in.

In the third, Brett Merner netted his first career goal at the 7:01 mark, knotting the score at 3-3. Ryan Sullivan intercepted a pass and then got out in transition, skating through the neutral zone and into the Raiders' offensive end. He found Brett Chorske, who then played a pass across the ice to a trailing Merner, and the first-year ripped a wrister into the back of the net.

The two teams went to overtime for the second straight night, but neither side could find a winner. Colgate controlled possession for most of the extra period and outshot the Pioneers 3-1.

The contest proceeded to a shootout that the Pioneers won 1-0, but it had no impact on the final game score.

Nick Haas made 23 saves in goal for the Raiders.
