Murphy’s Magic Seals 4-2 Colgate Win
HAMILTON— Senior netminder Hannah Murphy stopped a career-high 48 shots with a .960 save percentage to help No. 5 Colgate defeat No. 10/9 Quinnipiac, 4-2, inside the Class of 1965 Arena on Friday evening.
After Murphy made 43 saves through 54 minutes of action, the sophomore duo of Kaia Malachino and Madeline Palumbo found each other on back-to-back goals just 11 seconds apart to seal Colgate's ECAC-leading sixth ranked win of the season.
"If you've been following our program this year, specifically over the past three weekends, you've seen how outstanding Hannah has been," head coach Stefan Decosse said. "Everyone sees what she does on the ice — she's poised, calculated and makes big saves when we need them — but what nobody sees is how she holds herself in the dressing room, at practice and at team events. She's just an outstanding ambassador for our program and our school. I can't say enough good things about Hannah, and we're grateful to have her."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- An evenly-played opening period saw a textbook penalty kill from Colgate and a handful of dangerous scoring chances, but despite four-on four-hockey for two out of the final four minutes of the period, there were donuts on the scoreboard after one.
- Quinnipiac took the lead just over 90 seconds into the second stanza, but Kristýna Kaltounková equalized with her NCAA-leading 22nd score of the season, effortlessly beating three Bobcat defenders before picking her spot over the goalie's far shoulder.
- After the visitor's took another lead at the 12:39 mark, junior Alexis Petford netted a one-timer off the feed from senior Neena Brick that trickled off the netminder's blocker to knot the score at two heading into the final frame.
- Murphy stifled an alarming one-on-one Bobcat breakaway midway through the third, immediately thwarting another would-be winner just 30 seconds later.
- The Raiders' netminder made one more save before the tandem of Malachino and Palumbo connected for a pair of scores just 11 seconds apart, asserting a 4-2 lead with under six minutes remaining.
GAME NOTES
- Murphy added her fourth career 40+ save game and her third of the season in the win.
- Malachino extended her point streak to a team-high four games where she has totaled five tallies.
- Palumbo contributed her seventh multi-point outing of the season.
- The Raiders improved their record to 6-3 against ranked opponents this season, the most victories against ranked teams by any ECAC squad.
