Pais Pushes #5 Colgate Past Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Sophomore Emma Pais buried a rebounded shot from junior Elyssa Biederman on a Raider power play with six minutes to play in the third period to seal No. 5 Colgate's eighth-straight win, a 2-1 road victory over Union College.

After Colgate fell behind heading into the second period, sophomore Avery Pickering evened the score at the 15:56 mark while senior netminder Hannah Murphy made 22 saves in her 68th career win.

"We needed everyone and we got contributions from everyone in big ways tonight," head coach Stefan Decosse said. "I'm super proud of how we stuck together and did what we had to do to win. This was a real character win on the road against a tough, gritty, well-coached Union team."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Union struck first when a deflection in front of the net put the puck past Murphy's glove 15 minutes into the opening period.
  • The Raiders rebound in the second stanza, outshooting the home side 12-7.
  • Colgate knotted the scoreboard at one all when junior Sarah Roger slid a rebounded shot from sophomore Madeline Palumbo across the crease to Pickering, who deposited the puck into the back of the open net.
  • The Raiders again controlled the pace of the final frame, limiting the Garnett Chargers to just three shots and eventually taking the lead when Pais put in her eighth power-play goal of the season.

GAME NOTES

  • Murphy moves into second place for the most wins in a season by a Raider netminder with 21 victories so far in 2024-25, trailing Julia Vandyk who earned 25 victories in 2017-2018.
  • Pais is now second in the country with eight power-play goals this season.
  • Junior Sara Stewart is now on a three-game point streak after assisting on Pais' game-winning goal.
