#5 Colgate Bested by #6 Cornell

HAMILTON, N.Y. — Senior goalie posted her third-career 40+ save performance stopping 95% of shots faced, but a frustrating offensive night doomed No. 5 Colgate in a 2-1 defeat to No. 6 Cornell on Friday afternoon.

HAMILTON, N.Y. — Senior goalie Hannah Murphy posted her third-career 40+ save performance stopping 95% of shots faced, but a frustrating offensive night doomed No. 5 Colgate in a 2-1 defeat to No. 6 Cornell on Friday afternoon.

A slow beginning to each of the first two periods allowed the Big Red to jump out to a two-goal lead, and despite six power-play opportunities the Raiders could not ignite their offense until sophomore Kaia Malachino scored with just five minutes remaining in the third.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A largethic start for Colgate saw Cornell stifle the Raiders offensively, keeping the home side from logging a shot on goal until nearly seven minutes into the game.
  • Murphy made 18 of her 21 first period saves in the first 16 minutes of action, eventually conceding the first goal of the game when the Big Red converted on a two-on-one break.
  • The Raiders did not log a shot for the first 10 minutes of the second period, but eventually outshot the visitor's 12-11 in the second after allowing another Big Red Score and earning three empty power-play opportunities.
  • Trailing by two, the Raiders rifled off the first four shots of the third period, including a dangerous look for fifth-year Kristýna Kaltounková just outside the crease, but none touched twine.
  • With just under five minutes remaining, first-year Alexia Aubin fired a shot on net allowing Malachino to scoop in the rebound to give Colgate a fighting chance at a comeback.
  • A late Cornell penalty put the fans inside the Class of 1965 Arena on the edges of their seats, but Colgate could not find the equalizer despite pulling Murphy from net for nearly two full minutes of six-on-four action.

GAME NOTES

  • Hannah Murphy earned her second 40+ save game of the season, marking her 12th career outing with more than 30 stops.
  • Kristýna Kaltounková logged 11 shots on goal in the loss, the most by a Raider all season.
