Takeaways from #6 Colgate's ECAC opening weekend
HAMILTON -- The doors to the Class of 1965 Arena are closed after three-straight weeks of Colgate women's hockey. Well, just for one week, that is.
But even still, the Raiders can successfully put their six-game home stand behind them, after winning every game to boost their record to 9-3. It all concluded with the team's ECAC opening weekend, hosting RPI and Union College.
Both of Colgate's opponents were undefeated in ECAC play walking into the arena, but the Raiders defeated both the Engineers and the Garnet Chargers to start conference play 2-0.
TAKEAWAYS
Fifth-year Kristýna Kaltounková became the second-ever Raider to surpass 200 career points, reaching the mark with an assist in the 4-1 win over RPI. Kaltounková finished the weekend with two goals and two assists.
"I'm just super thrilled for Kalty," head coach Stefan Decosse said. "She's such an incredible teammate and leader. Every day in practice she competes and raises the level of our team on a daily basis, and she has earned the right to call herself a 200-point player in the NCAA."
For the second time this season, Colgate came back from a third period deficit, this time defeating Union College, 4-3. The Garnet Chargers took a one goal lead into the locker room before the final frame, but sophomore forward Alexis Petford and Kaltounková both scored in the third to secure a sixth-straight win.
"I'm happy to see the way our team stayed together there heading into the third down a goal," Decosse said. "Collectively, this group made the decision to make a push and we clawed back in it. I'm thrilled with the way this team comes together like we did tonight and this whole weekend."
The Raiders had their first third period comeback win against Maine on Oct. 26, where the Raiders scored four goals in the last 20 minutes.
Sophomore forward Kaia Malachino scored her first goal since netting two on Oct. 25, finding the back of the net against Union College on her birthday. Sophomore Emma Pais recorded five points in two games, bringing her point streak up to nine games going back to Colgate's win over Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 5.
Senior goalie Hannah Murphy played both games in the ECAC opening weekend, recording 40 saves and allowing just four goals. Murphy's now won 55 games in her career, bringing her season save percentage to .920 and improving her goalie winning percentage to .720 — tied for ninth in all NCAA Division I women's hockey.
