#5 Colgate Triumphs Over #6 Cornell, 4-2
ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior goalie Hannah Murphy saved 35 shots, junior Casey Borgiel added her second-career three-point night, and sophomore Emma Pais contributed a score and an assist to help No. 5 Colgate defeat No. 6 Cornell, 4-2, inside Lynah Rink on Saturday afternoon.
"I'm really excited about the way we responded tonight," head coach Stefan Decosse said. "Our team was prepared and we stuck together. Cornell is an excellent program but I really like the way we responded in specific moments throughout the weekend. I'm super excited for the group and I'm looking forward to continuing the process."
Both Raiders and Big Red scored in the later stages of the first and second period, respectively, before a three-goal third allowed Colgate to take control down the stretch. Cornell outshot the visitor's in every period, but Murphy's third-consecutive 30+ save game kept Colgate in front to seal the road win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Raiders struck first when Borgiel and fifth-year Kristýna Kaltounková connected to find first-year Alexia Aubin unmarked in front of the crease for her fourth goal of the season.
- A tightly-contested second saw Colgate go scoreless on a power-play opportunity, allowing Cornell to knot the score at one with just 20 seconds remaining in the period.
- The Big Red came out of the second intermission hot, peppering Murphy with the first four shots of the final frame.
- Murphy withstood the barrage until Borgiel collected a perfectly placed puck from Pais on a breakaway, firing a rocket over the goalie's glove to reestablish the Raiders' lead.
- Just 10 minutes later, junior Sara Stewart added an insurance tally in highlight fashion, contorting her body to deflect a shot from sophomore Ella Belfry into the back of the net.
- After both sides called back-to-back timeouts with three minutes remaining, Cornell cut the deficit to one with a shot that just barely tucked itself into the top right corner of Murphy's net.
- Playing with their netminder pulled for the final minute, the Big Red had no answer for Pais who caused a turnover at the blue line and broke away to bury the empty net goal.
GAME NOTES
- Colgate earned its second-straight win in Ithaca for the first time since the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.

- Murphy also logged her 13th career outing with 30+ saves, marking her seventh of the season and third in a row.
- Kaia Malachino extended her point streak to three games and has scored five tallies in as many contests.
