Softball Splits Day 1 in Spartanburg
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Colgate Softball scored five unanswered runs to beat NC A&T 5-4 in a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon at Hope Field. The Raiders dropped the nightcap to host Wofford 3-1 despite a strong performance in the circle from Maya Servedio.
Servedio tossed three innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts to secure the victory in the opening win over NC A&T. She pitched all six innings in the nightcap, striking out four while conceding three runs (one earned) despite shouldering the 3-1 defeat to the Terriers.
Coach Lamison-Myers' Comments
"It was really great to get the first win of the year. Both Maya and Alexa pitched great for us today. They continued to give us a chance each inning and in the first game we were able to capitalize. Overall, great team effort and I'm pleased with our progress and growth as a young group!"
Game 1 | Colgate 5, NC A&T 4
The Raiders were in a 4-0 hole after NC A&T dropped a four-spot in the home half of the first. Alexa Acker settled in after that and followed up with three scoreless frames to keep Colgate within striking distance. Colgate's offense got going in the top of the second and didn't stop the rest of the way.
Acker helped her own cause by leading off the second with a double to right center. She came around to score on an RBI double from Amanda DeSantis to get the Raiders on the board. Alexis Romero sliced the lead in half with a sacrifice fly, scoring Quinn Livesay to make it 4-2 in the third.
Mackenzie Lewis came in as a pinch-runner and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game in the fifth, 4-4. The Raiders benefited from more defensive miscues in the top of the sixth, with Herbst scoring on an error from third to give Colgate its first lead of the day, 5-4, with its fifth unanswered run.
Servedio fired a perfect bottom of the sixth and worked around an infield single in the seventh before shutting the door with a game-ending strikeout to preserve the 5-4 victory.
Game 2 | Wofford 3, Colgate 1
Wofford struck in the home half of the first and then added two more runs on a two-RBI double from Havalynn Abernathy to open a 3-0 lead through three innings in the nightcap. Servedio once again settled in and followed up with three scoreless innings to keep the Raiders within reach.
Colgate threatened in the top of the fourth with runners on second and third and nobody out, but a fielder's choice at the plate followed by a double play kept the score 3-0.
The Raiders were in business again in the seventh – and this time came through on a bases-loaded single from Claire Whalen to score Romero and trim the deficit to 3-1. With the tying run at second base and two outs, a flyout ended the game with Wofford holding on for the 3-1 decision.
