PHOENIX — Colgate fell in the Kickoff Classic finale to Wichita State on Sunday morning by a score of 9-1. Senior infielder Jillian Herbst went a perfect 3-3 at the plate to lead the Raiders while senior catcher Quinn Livesay stretched her hit streak to three games.
Junior pitcher Alexa Acker picked up her fourth hit in three games while also tossing three innings in the circle without conceding an earned run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Raiders fell behind by four runs in the first inning when the Shockers shot out of the gate with an RBI double, also capitalizing on a Colgate error by tacking on three more tallies.
- A Herbst single and a Livesay double put two Raiders in scoring position with only one out in the home half of the first, allowing first-year Lily Haluska to cut into the deficit with an RBI single to left field.
- Wichita State blew the game open in the third, adding five more runs on six hits and another Colgate error.
- Despite Herbst racking up her third hit in the bottom of the fourth, the Raiders could not score either of the two base runners and would fall to the mercy rule after failing to push a run across in the fifth.
