Colgate Set to Host Patriot League Championships
HAMILTON — The seventh-seeded Colgate women's tennis team (12-10, 3-5) takes on second-seeded Boston University (10-8, 6-1) in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Championships at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. Colgate will host this year's tournament, with matches on the J.W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts.
"Overall, it was a very solid year for the ladies with our sixth straight winning full season," said Head Coach Bobby Pennington. "We made the non-conference and conference schedules far more difficult and recorded some huge wins and tough losses. We finished in a three-way tie for the five seed and sadly lost on the tiebreaker and got a tough seeding. Boston U is an elite team and has won many championships, but we will do our best."
The matchup is the second of the season between the teams, with the Terriers taking the regular season match 6-1. However, the Raiders come into the contest riding a two-match winning streak, most notably beating fifth-seeded Bucknell 4-3.
Colgate had a strong regular season, finishing with a 12-10 record. First-year Rebecca Hess has been a revelation on the singles court, playing to a 16-5 record at lines four, five, and six. Senior captain Addie Eklund has also picked up double-digit wins on the season, coming into the tournament with a 13-9 record. Junior Amelia Galin and sophomore Sophia Montero have also picked up 12 wins each, playing at lines one and two, respectively.
All three of the squad's doubles teams have winning records on the campaign, led by Galin and Montero at line one with an 11-7 record. Sophomore Carina Cristobal and senior captain Eliza Podlas have picked up nine wins. Hess and Eklund have been a force at line three doubles, finishing the regular season 12-4.
Boston University enters the matchup with a 12-10 overall record while also picking up six conference wins. The Terriers have made the finals of the Patriot League Championships in nine of their ten years competing in the conference.
