Women’s Tennis Defeats Stony Brook

MIAMI — The Colgate women's tennis team completed an epic comeback against Stony Brook in the final match of their spring break on Wednesday.

Box Score MIAMI — The Colgate women's tennis team completed an epic comeback against Stony Brook in the final match of their spring break on Wednesday.

The Raiders dropped the doubles point and two singles matches to begin and had to win all four remaining courts to take the match. Sophomore Sophia Montero, first-year Rebecca Hess, senior captain Eliza Podlas, and finally senior captain Addie Eklund stepped up to take the remaining four singles matches, all in third sets, completing the comeback. The win puts the Raiders at 10-7 on the season.

"If I sat down in a dark room I could not construct or diagram a better match for my 700th at Gate," said Head Coach Bobby Pennington. "It was frankly a microcosm of my career with highs and lows and a lot of adversity and grit. To be down 0- 3 and have four complete warriors physically and mentally outlast a high-quality team is beyond rewarding and telling. Sophia, Eliza, Rebecca, and Addie were all down and out and came back to life. 10-7 with five league matches to go, it all comes down to the next four weeks."

The Seawolves came out strong in the doubles, sweeping all three courts. Stony Brook won line one and line three singles in under an hour to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

The first point of the day for the Raiders came from Montero at line two, who was tied at a set apiece before her opponent had to default due to injury. Shortly after, Podlas gave the squad some hope with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at line six singles. Hess continued her dominant season with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win at line five to level the match at 3-3. Eklund, who went down a set, completed the comeback with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win at line four to win the match for the Raiders.

Colgate returns to action March 29, taking on conference opposition Navy at Drumlins at 4 p.m.
