Join Assistant Director of Sustainability Julia Sparks in her favorite spring pastime - birding!Starting near the Colgate Cemetery, we will walk through the Colgate forests in search of year-long avian residents in addition to some of the earlier migratory songbirds that have made the return trip from their southern wintering grounds. Check out the 98 species identified on Colgate's trails on the eBird list. Along the way, we will also look out for blooming spring ephemeral wildflowers in the forest understory.The group will walk at a slow pace and will cover about one mile over the course of the walk. Binoculars will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own, if you have them. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and take precautions against ticks. This exhibition, curated by 10 students in the fall 2024 semester of MUSE 300: Museum Curating, features the themes of textiles and weaving. Showcasing works from the Longyear Museum of Anthropology’s basket and world textile collections, this exhibition explores the incredible amount of labor and skill that goes into creating woven art. The exhibition takes a comparative view of textiles from around the world, introducing the community significance of different designs and individual stylistic choices. The exhibition discusses how fiber art forms have changed as local and global markets develop, as well as the role that clothing can play in displays of nationalism and politics. Ultimately, Unraveled aims to inspire viewers to consider the benefits of hand-crafted works and foster an appreciation for the people behind the woven things we use and love each and every day.The exhibition features several new acquisitions, including three new works acquired from the Jalabil Maya women’s weaving collective during their artist residency last fall. Through an ongoing series of community conversations, artist and architect Suchi Reddy has been in dialog with students, faculty, staff, and townspeople throughout the 2024-2025 academic year to learn about the ways in which our encounters with reflection and misreflection in physical and digital spaces contribute to our experience of bias and belonging. A culmination of the year's conversations, Bias and Belonging poetically reframes the Colgate community's embodied experience of belonging in woven, textual and digital forms. Bias and Belonging is the latest iteration of Reddy's ongoing exploration into embodied states of being that reflect our individual and collective experience as we code switch and transform in evolving environments both digital and physical.Presented by the Art Department and the Christian A. Johnson Foundation**The Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence was established in 1986 as a challenge grant in support of the arts at Colgate. Skin, inscribed: A selection of contemporary Brazilian hand-processed filmsArtist and curator Tetsuya Maruyama will discuss contemporary practices by Brazilian artists working with analog film. The talk will be followed by a hand-picked program featuring works produced at artist-run film labs (film laboratories by artists, for artists) spread across Brazil’s vast and diverse geopolitical landscapes. Just as a painter applies raw paint on a canvas, a filmmaker applies light (and other matter) on a film strip. In these works, film is profaned as a tangible material, an event that comes into being as an ephemeral situation when it passes through a projector.
