Fred M Wright ’40, October 23, 2017. Theta Chi, Konosioni, boxing, wrestling, football. US Naval Reserve; 8 campaign medals and a bronze star. After graduating, he was a high school teacher and football coach. He then worked in sales management at Procter and Gamble for 23 years, followed by 11 years as VP of Western Farmers Cooperative in Seattle. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia, a son, and his brother. He is survived by a son, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Joseph W LaForte ’41, July 21, 2017. Kappa Delta Rho, Konosioni, Maroon, Salmagundi. He was an executive with IBM for 34 years before he moved to Juno Beach, FL, in 1976. There, he became a real estate agent and owner at Celestial Realty. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel, and his daughter. He is survived by his son, William ’70, 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

During a long career in medicine, he served as the chief of staff at Orlando General Hospital and as president of the Florida Academy of Osteopathy. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, and a stepdaughter.

A urologist for 40 years, he was honored as the Man of the Year by the American Kidney Foundation in 1992. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elsie. He is survived by their 5 children, including Bill ’73; his brother, George ’45; and his second wife, Martha, and her 5 children, including John Thompson ’87.
Nathaniel A MacDonald ’44, December 20, 2017. Sigma Nu, University Chorus, student government, marching band. US Air Force: WWII. Tufts U: MD, 1950. After completing his service, he had a private practice in internal medicine in Danvers (MA) for 35 years and was also chief of staff at Hunt Memorial Hospital 1959–72. He was predeceased by his wife, Eunice. He is survived by 4 children, including Natalie ’78, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren.

He spent his professional life in advertising and sales in Philadelphia, eventually becoming eastern advertising manager at Chilton Publishing Co. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Leo A Suslow ’48, August 24, 2017. Debate Society, student government. University of Connecticut: PhD, 1954. He worked in labor affairs for the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC, becoming director of labor, manpower, and social development programs. He then became an official with the United Auto Workers union and returned to the OAS as a consultant in the ’80s. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, and their 2 children.
Russell N Taylor ’48, October 24, 2017. Outing Club, indoor track. US Navy: WWII. Lehigh University: MS, 1950. Throughout his career, he used his geology education in his work with oil companies. In 1973, he was president of the Abilene Geological Society and became a honorary life member. In 1975, he founded Big Country Geophysical, a data-gathering company. From 1983–85, he served as president of WeCTOGA, now Texas Alliance of Energy Producers. He also served McMurry University as head of the Geology department for 24 years. He was predeceased by his daughter, 2 sons, and their mother, Kathleen. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, and her 4 sons, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his son, William, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandsons.
Raymond J Gorman Jr ’49, September 21, 2017. Phi Kappa Psi, University Chorus, Maroon, basketball, lacrosse. He was self-employed for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Doris, 2 sons, 2 daughters, 6 granddaughters, a sister, and 3 nephews.
Sherwood W Anderson ’50, June 4, 2017. Phi Beta Kappa, swimming. Princeton Seminary, BD. University of Edinburgh, PhD. He served 27 years in the US Navy Reserves as chaplain, retiring with the rank of captain. He was a minister for more than 50 years in churches in PA, OH, and FL, as well as interim senior pastor for churches in numerous other states. He is survived by his wife, Liz, and 2 children.

Matthew W Elson ’50, December 12, 2017. Indoor and outdoor track. US Navy; US Air Force. A radiologist, he was on the staff at Ohio State Medical Center and an associate professor at Ohio State University. He then became chief radiologist at West Allis Memorial Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, and is survived by 3 children, 2 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Sigma Chi, Konosioni, Colgate Thirteen, University Chorus, golf; Alumni Corporation Board, Maroon Council, Planned Giving, Class Gift Committee, Alumni Award for Distinguished Service, Alumni Maroon Citation Award. US Army. Upon graduation, he joined Sealright Packaging Company, where he worked for 31 years, eventually becoming manager of the international sales division. For the last 10 years of his professional life, he was senior development officer for Colgate. He was predeceased by a daughter, his sister, and nephew Gregory ’79. He is survived by his wife, Meredith; daughter Leslie Heaslip Wengenroth ’74 and her husband, Ray ’69; 2 sons, including Jeff ’77; a daughter-in-law; brother Harold ’52 and sister-in-law; 7 grandchildren, including Eric ’12; 3 great-grandchildren; and niece Gail ’79.
George C Rogers Jr ’50, MA’57, October 21, 2017. Phi Gamma Delta. US Army: WWII. After graduation, he returned to Colgate to work as a preceptor from 1951–54. He continued teaching at Boston University in 1954. He was one of the founding members of Mass Bay Community College, where he taught psychology, sociology, and anthropology for more than 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Sarah, his son, Caleb ’74, and his daughter.
Harold M Sporborg Jr ’50, November 17, 2017. Phi Kappa Tau, Philosophy Club, hockey. US Army: WWII, POW. He worked in sales throughout his life and was the owner of Cinema Systems in Atlanta, GA. He is survived by 3 daughters, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was a writer for newspapers and worked in public relations at his own firm, Robert K Otterbourg & Company. He also authored books on changing careers and active retirement. He was predeceased by his wife, Susan. He is survived by 2 children, a grandson, and a step-grandson.

He spent most of his professional life as an executive at Johnson & Johnson, traveling to support the company’s global expansion. He was predeceased by his daughter, Suzanne ’75, and his son, R Geoffrey ’82. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, his son, Gregory ’82, a daughter, and 4 grandchildren.
M Hallstead Christ ’53, November 12, 2017. Sigma Chi, International Relations Council, Outing Club, Sailing Club. New York University: LLB, 1955. He was elected to the Board of the Town of Oyster Bay and served as Comptroller of Nassau County. He practiced law throughout his life, serving as judge on the NY State Supreme Court from 1982 until his retirement in 1992. He was predeceased by his wife, Ann. He is survived by 4 children and 8 grandchildren.

Leonard G Dennick ’56, March 13, 2017. Delta Upsilon, Maroon, Salmagundi, University Chorus, orchestra. Columbia University, MD. He worked variously as a doctor at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY, and an instructor at NY Medical College. He then joined the pharmaceutical research company Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he worked for more than a decade before retiring in 1991. He is survived by his sister.

After Colgate, he worked at direct selling companies, serving as the president and CEO of Nature’s Sunshine Products and president worldwide for Tupperware Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Maggie, and 5 children.

Ronald Schaupp ’56, October 15, 2017. Lambda Chi Alpha, Masque and Triangle, Maroon Key, University Chorus, student government. US Navy Medical Corps: 1961-1963. Hahnemann University School of Medicine: MD, 1960. He served his 3-year residency in radiology, during which he diagnosed and treated many underprivileged populations. He practiced for 8 years in Cherry Hill, NJ. In Watertown, NY, he helped to develop the first CT scanner and MRI units, which were the first of their kind north of Syracuse. He was the head of Northern Radiology 1985–89. He is survived by his wife, June, and 2 children.

He worked at Bell Laboratories before joining the first African American investment company, First Harlem Securities Inc, as its CEO. At the time of his passing, he was an adjunct professor of Manhattan Community College. He is survived by his wife, Marlene, their son, and 3 grandsons.

Richard T Randall ’59, MA’61, November 11, 2017. Phi Delta Theta, Maroon Key, Konosioni, football, basketball, lacrosse, baseball. For 50 years, he was a teacher at Columbia High School in the East Greenbush (NY) Central School District. Also a coach throughout his life, he developed the lacrosse program at Columbia High School and served as head coach for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Sally, 3 children, and 6 grandchildren.

He completed two college marketing textbooks and published an autobiography named Seven Webfoot Way. He is survived by his significant other, Kathy, his son, Mike ’83, his daughter, and a grandson.

Passionate about education, he advocated for legislation in California that expanded the state’s investment in special education and later directed the Special Education Division of the Vallejo School District. He worked in investment banking and law for many years. He also co-founded the Southwest Oregon Kite Festival. He is survived by his wife, Lynn, and 2 children.
Jonathan M Klarfeld ’60, January 8, 2018. Delta Kappa Epsilon, ice hockey, football. He was a journalism professor for more than 40 years at Boston University. In addition to teaching, he was a media critic for the Boston Herald and a restaurant columnist for the Boston Phoenix. Also, he co-founded the Beacon Hill Rugby Club and an all-star team called The Sorcerers. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughter Victoria ’06, and a son.
Andre U Buchs ’61, August 25, 2017. Phi Gamma Delta, football, indoor track. US Army: Panama; Army Commendation Medal. University of Pennsylvania, DMD. He spent 43 years as an oral surgeon in central Florida, retiring in 2016. He was an expert on dental implants, placing more than 16,000 in his career. He is survived by his wife, Verna, 3 daughters, and 7 grandchildren.

He worked in the production department of Columbia Records for many years and then served in family court in Herkimer, Oneida, Warren, and Saratoga counties. He is survived by 2 daughters, 3 stepchildren, and 4 grandchildren.

He practiced dentistry for 40 years, dedicating part of his career to providing dental care to patients with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other special needs. He is survived by his wife, Constance, and a son.
Robert P Horne ’63, October 21, 2017. Phi Kappa Tau, International Relations Council, soccer. US Navy: Vietnam. He had a long and storied career as a pilot, flying with the Military Airlift Command in the Navy after college. He was later stationed in Antarctica to support the US Geological Survey’s research activity; the “Horne Glacier” is named after him. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Buchanan, and 4 children.

After 3 years of private practice, he worked for 36 years as an attorney for Allegheny Power. He was a former president of the Washington County Bar Association. Mark Edwards, November 19, 2017. He joined Colgate in 1998 as an assistant professor of sociology. In 2003, he served as the acting director of the Office of Undergraduate Studies. He also was assistant dean of multicultural affairs 2004–2005 and dean of institutional diversity 2005–2006. Most recently, he was the director of diversity and inclusion at Dakota State University in Madison, SD. He is survived by 3 children and 2 grandchildren.
