Walkland Named Head Coach for Bishop Kearney U19 Selects
HAMILTON – Colgate Women's Ice Hockey's widely-respected and veteran assistant coach Chelsea Walkland has announced that she is stepping down from her position to take on the head coaching role at Bishop Kearney's U19 Selects program.
Walkland joined the Colgate women's ice hockey program in 2019 and helped guide the Raiders to unprecedented success. She carried a 123-41-11 record in five seasons as an assistant in Hamilton, aiding in the development of three All-Americans, 11 national team players, 19 All-ECAC selections, and 35 ECAC Hockey All-Academic honorees.
"We have been very fortunate to have Chelsea as part of our coaching staff here at Colgate over the past five years," Head Coach Greg Fargo said. "She is not only a remarkable coach but also a wonderful person, and her family has become a cherished part of our community."
"All of us are thrilled for Chelsea and her family as she embarks on this new journey at Bishop Kearney and I can't express enough gratitude for her contributions to Colgate Hockey throughout her time here," Fargo continued. "She has been instrumental in helping us reach new heights in our program since the day she arrived, and we know that she will continue to excel as a head coach back in her hometown of Rochester, NY."
Walkland was a key piece in Colgate winning four-straight ECAC Hockey championships, a feat that has never been accomplished before in league history. The Raiders have consistently ranked in the top five teams in the country during Walkland's tenure, peaking at number two in 2024.
With Walkland's mentorship, Colgate also earned the program's second-ever trip to the NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Frozen Four this past April.
The Rochester, N.Y. native spent last summer as the head coach for Team USA in the Collegiate Series against Canada, where the United States swept the three-game series. She also served as an assistant coach at the Buffalo Sabres' Development Camp and was named to the USA Hockey U18 staff for the 2021 World Championships.
"My time at Colgate has been nothing short of incredible," Walkland said. "When something is this hard to leave, I believe it means how special it was. I will be forever grateful to Greg Fargo for the opportunity to come to Colgate. I am thankful for the privilege of working alongside some of my best friends and amazing student-athletes everyday. Lastly, I am extremely thankful for the wonderful people and tight-knit Colgate community that has welcomed my family with open arms from day one. We will miss everyone dearly."
