Raiders’ Season Ends in League Semifinals
BOSTON, MASS. — Colgate men's soccer saw its season end at Nickerson Field, losing to the top-seeded Boston University Terriers, 2-0. The Raiders' staunch defensive effort held BU scoreless for the first 80 minutes of the game, but the Terriers broke through twice in the final 10 minutes to eliminate Colgate from the Patriot League Tournament.
Nothing of substance came from the first 45 minutes of play thanks to the stifling Colgate backline of Dale Lepper, Jacob Blackwin and Liam Winograd, all of whom played the full 90 minutes in the loss.
Offensively, the Raiders saw the best chance of the game in the 23rd minute, when Adam Fam made a run deep into the BU defensive third. Fam freed some space and sent a dribbler into the box which met the foot of Cason Stafford, but the sophomore midfielder put it high of the cage.
The only other shot of the first half came from BU and was blocked by Winograd before it could test Colgate goalkeeper Andrew Cooke in net.
The second stanza played much like the first with neither side able to get anything going on the attack. Perhaps the disjointed offense came from the combined 34 fouls, 23 of which came in the second half.
But just when it looked like overtime was in store, the Terriers took the lead with a deep strike from graduate student and All-Patriot League First Team selection Colin Innes. Minutes later, Innes capitalized on Colgate's eagerness to net the equalizer, sneaking behind the back line to give BU a 2-0 lead.
In a game in which the final score did not reflect the intensity and closeness of the match, the Raiders did not fold easily. Alejandro Coury nearly cut the lead in half off a free kick in the 86th minute, but his shot went high.
Head Coach Erik Ronning's 18th season at the helm ends with an 8-10-2 record and a 4-3-2 mark in Patriot League competition.
