HAMILTON — Colgate's varsity eight and varsity four will compete at the IRA National Championship Regatta this weekend in West Windsor, N.J. The action opens Friday with the varsity eight heat race at 8:40 a.m. The top two boats from each heat advance straight to the semifinals Saturday morning, while the remaining will race in repechages Friday afternoon to determine semifinal placement. The finals are slated for Sunday morning. Colgate's varsity four competes in its time trial at 11:20 a.m., Friday followed by the semifinals that afternoon. The finals will be Saturday morning. Last year the 1V8 placed 20th, which marked the boat's third straight top-20 finish at the national championship event. The crew has had another impressive season, which includes winning the SIRA Championship Regatta for the second-straight year, a victory that earned the Raiders an automatic bid to the IRAs. The 1V8 also won the inaugural Atlantic Sprints and medaled at the Dad Vail Regatta for the second-straight season, taking home bronze. Colgate's varsity eight was ranked No. 22 in the final IRA/IRCA Poll as it maintained a spot in the national rankings every week. This season, the varsity four took 13th at the Head of the Charles and fourth at the Head of the Schuylkill. The boat also picked up a victory at the Founders Cup. Following the IRA National Championship, the Raiders will train for the Henley Royal Regatta June 27-July 4 in Henley-on-Thames, England.
