Raiders Drop First Road Test at Drexel, 73-56
PHILADELPHIA – A cold-shooting night paired with Drexel's hot start did not bode well for the Colgate men's basketball team in a 73-56 loss to the Dragons on Saturday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Colgate fell behind 10-0 and never recovered. Jeff Woodward led the team in scoring with 14 points on 6-of-11 from the field and Jalen Cox finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and four steals. The Raiders shot 33.3 percent (20-60) from the field and a measly 16 percent (4-25) from behind the arc. COACH LANGEL'S COMMENTS "First, credit to Drexel. They really shot well in the first half and we did not. (Kobe) MaGee was terrific. The few times we cut into their lead, they answered with big shots. Two by Hargrove to end the first half and then two by Blakeney during a run in the second half. It'd be easy to say that they beat us at the three-point line, but there was more to it than that. Their offensive rebounding percentage was just too high when we needed to offset bad shooting. Overall, they were tougher than we were and more ready to win the game today. And that responsibility falls on the coach. The early-season road doesn't get any easier for us but we will be hard at work to try and keep getting better."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
- Drexel started the game on a 10-0 run and Colgate fell victim to a red-hot Kobe MaGee who started the game 6-for-6 from the field. He had a career-high 21 points in the first half.
- The Raiders had a hard time scoring in the half-court offense but found some rhythm in transition thanks to three first-half steals from Cox. His scoop-and-score with 1:49 left in the half cut the deficit to 36-30, which was as close as Colgate would get in the opening stanza.
- Colgate's defense kept the Raiders in the game but the offense could never get going. Cummins' 3-pointer with 12:07 left cut the deficit to 52-45 but the Raiders wouldn't get any closer.
- Drexel's Shane Blakeney immediately countered with a 3-pointer of his own and the home team's lead was in double-digits the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Colgate shot 33.3 percent from the field and 16 percent from behind the arc, while Drexel connected on 43 percent overall (24-56) and from behind the arc (13-30) while both teams were 12-for-15 from the free throw line for an 80 percent clip.
- The Raiders were beaten on the glass 44-30 but only turned the ball over five times. Colgate, which only had five turnovers, scored 11 points off 12 Drexel turnovers.
- Chandler Baker scored nine of Colgate's 12 bench points, finishing 4-of-8 from the field.
- Drexel's MaGee finished with 28 points on 10-of-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from behind the arc.
