Men's Hockey Hosts Cornell in ECAC Quarterfinals

HAMILTON — The No. 3 seeded Colgate Raiders (18-13-3, 13-17-2 ECAC Hockey) will host the No. 6 seeded Cornell Big Red (14-10-6, 10-8-4 ECAC Hockey in a best-of-three quarterfinal series this weekend.

Game 1 is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Game 2 will also be at 7 p.m. the following day, and Game 3, if necessary, will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The Raiders are coming off a bye week after securing a top-four finish, while the Big Red defeated Yale in the opening round last weekend.

The teams met Dec. 6-7 in a home-and-home series, with Cornell winning the first game in overtime 3-2 at Lynah Rink. The Raiders netted three third period goals to win 6-3 in Hamilton the next night.

 The Raiders and Big Red have met 169 times heading into the weekend. The last playoff battle was in the 2022 ECAC Quarterfinals at Cornell. The Raiders won the series in three games, securing a spot in the semifinals in Lake Placid.

Colgate had three ECAC All-League selections. Brett Chorske earned first team honors after posting career-bests in goals (15) and points (33), also tallying 18 assists. Chorske sits tied for fifth in ECAC Hockey in goals and ranks tied for fourth in points. He looks to extend his three-game point streak this weekend.

Senior Tommy Bergsland grabbed a spot on the second team for the second straight season. He ranked tied for seventh in the ECAC in assists during conference play with 14. He also sits tied for third on Colgate in overall points with 24. Michael Neumeier was the only unanimous selection for the All-Rookie Team. He has notched eight goals and 12 assists during his first season in Hamilton. He also falls fifth overall in scoring for the Raiders and has totaled a +11 rating.

Alex DiPaolo ranks second on the team with 25 points (10G, 15A), having netted a team-best four power play goals. The senior also ranks sixth in ECAC Hockey in faceoff percentage (.575). Max Nagel is first among Colgate rookies with 24 points (6G, 18A). He leads conference first-years in helpers and sits fifth in points.

Senior Ben Raymond looks to continue his offensive momentum after posting two goals in the Raiders' last game against Union. He has registered career bests in goals (9), assists (9), and points (18).

During conference play, the Raiders led the ECAC in goals per game (3.64), assists per game (6.14), and points per game (9.77).

On the defensive side, Reid Irwin has posted 18 games with multiple blocks, including eight contests with three or more. The senior has recorded a team-high 61, fifth most in ECAC Hockey. Bergsland falls behind him with 51 blocks.

Goaltender Andrew Takacs recorded a 19-12-2 record, a .902 save percentage, and a 2.78 goals-against average. Takacs made 527 saves during league play, the second most in the conference. He recorded two shutouts against ECAC opponents, doing so at Clarkson and against RPI.

The winner of the quarterfinal series heads to Lake Placid for the championship weekend. The semifinals are on Friday, March 21 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., and the championship will be on Saturday, March 22 at 5 p.m., inside Herb Brooks Arena.
