HAMILTON Colgate field hockey's season came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the Raiders fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 4-0, in a cold, rainy affair at Tyler's Field. Offensively, Colgate could only muster one shot on goal while goalkeeper Claire van Kempen tied her career-high with 11 saves to lead the Raiders on defense.

Colgate came out firing with an up-tempo gameplan that forced Wake Forest on its heels early. Through the first eleven minutes, the Raiders were keeping pace with the Demon Deacons evening the shot total to two apiece before the visitors rattled off four straight shots on goal to close the first quarter.

The scoreless draw did not hold for long, as Wake Forest broke through just under three minutes into the second frame. Van Kempen made back-to-back saves coming off the Demon Deacons' penalty corner, but the third shot in a row found paydirt to put the Raiders in an early hole.

After Wake Forest doubled its advantage midway through the third quarter of play, Colgate saw its best chance of the afternoon fall just short. It started with Grace Schmelzinger dumping off a pass to Lily Schoonmaker just past the 23-meter line. Schoonmaker rifled another pass towards the goal that bounced off the post, ricocheting just inches away from Tyler Argilagos' stick who was eagerly waiting for the rebound.

After safely clearing the ball out of their offensive half, the Demon Deacons successfully dominated possession, putting in two more goals in the fourth quarter to hand the Raiders their 13th loss of the year.
