Thompson’s Late Goal Leads Colgate Past Lafayette
HAMILTON – Lauren Thompson scored with just under 10 seconds remaining to give Colgate its second win of the season and first home win over Lafayette, 9-8, on Saturday afternoon.
Thompson squeezed between two defenders and took a low shot toward the cage. The ball bounced between the legs of the Lafayette goalie, hit the post and ricocheted off the back of the goalie, trickling across the goal line with 9.7 seconds remaining, giving the Raiders their second Patriot League victory after back-and-forth action for four quarters.
COACH TAYLOR'S COMMENTS
"I was excited for the team today. We have been in similar situations this season and not found a way to win, but not today. Today we finished the game on a go-ahead goal from Lauren Thompson with less than ten seconds left on the game clock. A strong defensive game coupled with some gritty offensive play and pretty goal scoring led by Caroline Panzier several on assists by Kyra Lucey secured us the win and a continued opportunity to make the Patriot League Tournament." HOW IT HAPPENED
Lucy Licata got the Raiders going early, netting her team-high 22nd of the season to give the Raiders an early 1-0 advantage. Caroline Panzirer scored back-to-back goals, the first coming from the stick of Kyra Lucey and the second being a free-position shot. Colgate led 3-0 with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.
Lafayette was able to score two unanswered before the end of the first frame but the Raiders remained ahead 3-2 after one quarter of action.
Panzirer completed her first half hat trick scoring her third just 52 seconds into the second quarter. Thompson extended her goal streak to six games, netting her 18th goal of the season and the Raiders remained in control with a 5-3 lead with six minutes left in the half.
Lucey connected with Panzirer for the second time of the afternoon, giving the Raiders a 6-3 lead heading into the break.
Lucey found Licata with just over 11 minutes left in the third quarter for her 22nd assist of the season and 80th assist of her career. Lucey now sits alone in second all time for career assists in Colgate women's lacrosse history. Lafayette scored its fourth of the game with 5:38 left in the third frame to cut the Raiders lead to 7-4.
The Leopards found a late run and scored three unanswered goals before Licata buried a Kait Henning pass just before time expired in the third quarter giving Colgate an 8-7 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Lafayette netted the first goal of the fourth quarter with just over six minutes to play, tying the game at eight before Thompson's late goal sent the Raiders home victorious, 9-8.
